Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tignes at the beginning of December

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi everyone. Advice needed please. Am looking to go to Tignes in the first week of December. I tried to go in April, but was beaten by the ash cloud. My worry is snow at that time of year. Has anyone been in the last few years? Is the snow ok at the begining of December?

Many thanks

We had a great week there on the 12th December last year, and will be back there at the same time this year. Conditions were great, but it was very very cold on a couple of days - minus 35 at the top of the glacier.

You really don't need to worry about snow - there will always be something to ski up there.

matt23, I've been the last 2 years in the 2nd week in December staying at Les Boisse. Plenty of snow both years skiing back to Les Boisse (although last year it was officially a closed piste).

I've been then, too. Plenty of snow, though not all open by any means. Can't remember what year it was; conditions will obviously vary a good deal from year to year.

pam w, has been pretty much all open for the past couple of years, albeit with localised closures because of too much snow/high winds

Its down in Tignes Le Lac - fairly large, fairly basic but its one of the first places to open for the season. Its not ski in / out though - unless the road is covered in snow!!!!!! But its fine for most stays where skiing / snowboarding is your main reason for going as opposed to staying in the chalet all day!

Steve Angus, I think you might be confusing the Hauts de Tovière with the other Mark Warner Chalethotel in Tignes, the Aiguille Percée, which is in Tignes Le Lac. The Hauts de Tovière is the one in Tignes Le Lavachet, with Scotty's Bar on the ground floor.

I stayed in the Hauts de Tovière in Jan 2007. The room I stayed in was ensuite, but fairly basic and fairly small for a twin. I didn't have any problems with noise from Scotty's bar but IIRC one or two of those in rooms directly above it did. The food was good and the service was friendly. The major plus for me was the 5 days ski hosting - they had groups for 'fast', 'intermediate' and 'leisurely intermediate', which you could swap between and opt in and out of. At that time the hotel was adults only outside the school holidays, but that's since changed. The Aiguille Percée averages better reviews on Tripadvisor, and is a bit more central and closer to more of the nightlife, but costs a bit more.

Jon, I don't know Tignes at all, is that a long way from "Chalet Hotel Aigle ...just 100 metres (approx walk) from the nearest piste which leads to the Paquis and Chaudanne lifts in Tignes Le Lac" which is where I'll be staying? If so, shall have to find a watering hole between the two!Toofy Grin

Hurtle, Lez Melezes is in Les Boisses which is a lower village and we will have to come to you; there is no watering hole between and it'll be a taxi ride back between us

Not a problem, I have - there's not a lot in Les Boisses so it's expected that the odd excursion into Tignes will happen. Do you like rum? wink
