Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Adding 'Chat' to Snowheads.

Hey how hard, expensive would it be to add this facility to the forum. Less chatty posts between members makes for a more interesting read and don't seem so clique.

its would be good but it does risk killing the forum as folk tend to chat rather than post and all those helpfull little snippets of wisdom/smut/abuse get lost in the the mists of time.

EDIT: oooh 500 posts, I only came here to ask if it was a good idea to ski with a broken arm rolling eyes now where is the door??? Very Happy

SMALLZOOKEEPER, how are you planning to implement the chat functionality? One to one or a multi-user thread? Neither are appropriate, or functional, for an online forum. Show us an example of where it's currently being used in a similar community based web-site forum and we can asses it's capabilities and feasibility

It is there as basic functionaility with phpBB.

you have a couple of options;
a few lines which can be hidden by the members above the forum list;

Or it can be a pop out from the forums;

I have run forums where we had "Private chat" and it was hardly used becuase it was felt to be too much hassle to open by the members.

In my experience of running several similar forums to SH with chat feature enabled it in no way reduces the quality or quantity of topics posted if anything it improvs the quality and relevance of topics and it keeps the majority of the irrelevant stuff off the boards.

It makes a "catch up" a lot quicker and can create a better feeling of a fun community and relationships developing.

It is very hard to get to know your fellow users in a topic as they only choose to post in the topic and therefore the scope of the conversation is limited to the topic in hand (or the topic goes terribly off topic).

Happy to discuss this further with anyone who needs to.

The chatty bit of snowHeads - the AZ - is all but dead, and is certainly dead boring.

FB and loss of interest by many of those who used to post more frequently (me included) may mean that "chat" horse has already bolted elsewhere, and perhaps the sH board will become increasingly just about snow. Not necessarily a bad thing. Perhaps an understandable evolution. But the AZ and BZK etc etc will look more and more cliquey and less interesting as fewer people use them

In the last 4 hours - additions to just 11 AZ threads of which perhaps 2 or 3 are threads new today. The OT chat area of the other big forum I currently post on - which is just one of those for a sport which has perhaps a similar number of active participants - has had additions to 60 threads - almost all of which are new today. And is way more interesting and funny. And yes I have started many many threads in the past but now I just CBA. Confused

A compromise solution might work. There are different ways that boards/forums can be implemented. The popbitch board has a nice feel to it, with several conversation threads viewable in the same UI. Ignore the fatuous content from the worlds most self absorbed twunts, the structure and format works well.

the thing is a topic is a topic... the OP defines what the topic is about.. when a forum has been established a while there are very few "new topics" therefore people become disinterested whereas imo a "chat" box is more of a "pub feel" where you can have a "conversation" as opposed to a topic which stimulates a debate.

Crikey, how do you find the time to keep up with that lot, let alone contribute? Shocked

That makes sense. I guess that if people do actually want to chat it would be good to have a place to do so.

It seems to work OK on a motorcycling forum I use, also phpBB based. It means the threads tend to be more focussed.

Thinking about it some more, here's how I see the difference;

A standard forum (such as SH);
> You go into a busy bar
> there are lots of groups at different tables and you're invited to join each table and contribute but you feel that you've not really got anything to contribute to the discussion becuase there appears to be others at the table with a far greater knowledge than you, besides all you really wanted was a cheeky beer and a chat so you sup your beer and leave.

A forum with chat;
> you go into a busy bar
> there's loads of various conversations going on, some about specific topics some of which are quite interesting
> as you order your pint (because all you wanted was a cheeky beer and unwind) someone in the bar says "Hi Marcellus, how's your day going?"
> a conversation ensues and soon someone else joins in the discussion and so on,
> you buy a round and move to a table to continue the discussion.

Therefore in a forum with chat those who just want to have a discussion about a specific topic can still do so, but those who just want a chat can do so as well.

marcellus, sounds good to me.

stoatsbrother, obviously, if you don't find anything at all of interest here, there's no point in being here. But, as marcellus implies, wherever you go, be it a real life bar, an ordinary forum, or a chat room, you're not going to find everything to your taste. I don't find the AZ 'a total snore' but perhaps my expectations are not particularly high. General chit-chat about the odd interesting topic will do me, whether in 'real' chat time or otherwise. I can't be bothered with lengthy monologues and I don't personally find this a comfortable medium for in-depth discussions about matters that really mean a lot to me - I have anxieties about my knowledge of any given topic being sufficient to be worth airing and also worry about boring people. So my posts tend to be short and I rarely have the courage to initiate a topic. I like to think that there is a place here for me, without risking being dubbed a total snore. Perhaps I'm deluding myself. Confused

Is this also the 'off-season' for your other forum or is this peak season, such as might be the case for a cycling forum? Summer is always quiet here, but come autumn/winter is obviously a lot busier. TBH, I don't really care whether the AZ is riveting, boring, exciting, wha'ever. It is what we make of it. The AZ isn't my main means of socialising through the day, I have plenty of people to chat with/avoid at work Madeye-Smiley I probably read/dip in more than I post in all the sections, just because I don't have time or the will to make or read lengthy posts. Especially those with looong paragraphs. I wouldn't bother with 'chat', I don't on fb.

cathy, I used to buy the seasonal argument but I think the AZ was pretty quiet/boring/predictable over this winter too - and haven't seen you around it much!

I think the last time anyone did put any data out there, traffic on the whole site was up but on the AZ was down substantially. I am not saying this is a bad thing at all. Probably a healthy natural evolution. Just saying FB may have replaced the chatty aspects of the AZ. And perhaps after you have known everyone for a while, you know what most are going to say. Back to SZKs clique thingy.

rayscoops, no. This is just the chat bit which I think is disappearing, and SZK is saying should be dealt with by some kind of IRC model.

I find SH the busiest forum I use - you usually get a quick reply which is nice. Obviously there are long-term posters who "know" each other (well those meeting in real life really must do) and newbies such as myself may feel "left out" of the chit-chat but, hey, it takes time to get known doesn't it. I don't expect to barge my way in to an established forum. So I guess I'm saying I find it OK as it is - there's a wealth of knowledge here and it's sometimes good to be put straight by people who know stuff. There's some smart people on here. I even enjoy the political threads which can bring out the worst in people but it's still cool. Like the snow......

stoatsbrother, What do I think? I think you are pretty much the same as me, you miss the confrontational stuff the quick flick over to JWAZ to gain an explaination the annual summer agro/argument/agressive discussion. FFS no one even bites on my SCGB groundbait these days! Would a chat facility add anything? no of course not, you can do that by telephone, MSN, fb or pm. But in those media you cannot demonstrate what a smartarse you are.
So do you need it, right now? No.
