Do you know exactly the number of weeks and days until your next ski holiday (24 weeks 6 days - without just counting it then!)?
What signs of 'winter is on it's way' do you look for? Signs I've seen this week include:
1. Autumn/winter ranges coming out - I got very excited to see 'autumn collection from so-and-so' newsletter in my email.
2. Starting to get dark around 8pm.
3. Back to school adverts on the TV.
4. Winter 2010/11 ski brochures dropping through the letter box.
5. I've signed up for a 10K in autumn to help with the pre-winter training.
What 'signs' do you look for or have you seen????

The peak of the Northern Hemisphere Summer will be Thurs 12th Aug.
After that date, the top half of the world starts to cool down.

We had summer from late May until mid-July. A fairly long summer for once. The weather has been mostly rubbish since then, generally overcast, plenty of rain and temperatures hardly venturing above 20º. So yes, summer appears to be over. I've even noticed a few fallen leaves already.

they come out before summer really gets under way. A woman in M & S clearly thought I was daft to be disappointed in mid July that there were hardly any T shirts left between the sizes of 8 and 18. Summer is in its fullest swing in the Alps. The myrtilles are ripening nicely and the people who will be busy in winter are catching up with things like building extensions and doing maintenance (and farming, of course). I love skiing as much as anybody but I have no intention of wishing the summer away. I shall sit beside a nice mountain stream with some bread and cheese, an apple and a bottle of beer at lunchtime, and I hope there won't be any sign of winter coming. It's been coldish up here, so far, and hopefully some warmer weather lies ahead. If winter starts too early some of the new chairlift building operations will be difficult, too.

50 days to go before my trip to Tignes.
In Homebase last week I tried to buy some lamp oil for garden lamps. I was told 'we only stock that in the summer sir'.

I certainly don't wish the summer away, in fact I hate winter weather here at home, I'd rather reserve that for the Alps. Having said that my first skiing trip is only 83 days away (earliest ever for me). I might even need an ad hoc trip out next month and would probably fit a days skiing in then too.

Can't wait. Dunno about there but here the blokes' summer range is all pink and lilac. Only went in for some t-shirts and thought I'd inadvertently walked in to the girls section. I don't do "shopping", and I definitely don't do "shopping for pink and lilac".

You never know till you try it, you might surprise yourself!
In terms of signs of autumn: loads of leafs on the pavement and people dressing in boots and opaque tights (though that might not be conclusive as some never stopped)

I was in Snow and Rock in Hemel on Saturday looking at their left over mens' jackets in the sale. Seems like baby sh*t yellow and bile green were not the hits S & R might have hoped for last season.
Pink and Lilac skiwear will no doubt be available at substantial discounts this time next year.

Just got up and having a coffee on the deck at a beach house on long beach island new jersey US of A. It's 08:12 and just under 30 degrees so not really thinking about it for the next couple of weeks.
On return though mini ricfrench will be at Hemel learning to snowboard so I'd say the end starts then

Recently arrived in Hokkaido and there's absolutely no sign of winter. 29C and humid today. I hiked up one of my local ski hills at the weekend and it seems so improbable that it'll be under metres of snow in a few months!
I can't wait for it to get colder!

I'm sitting here with the windows open and for the first time in a few months there is a cool breeze, another bonus, it's raining. Heat wave over at last. Now where is the snow.

rob@rar, Glad to hear as I'm off to the Alps for a summer holiday in a weeks time. Then I've got Bestival on the Isle of Wight in September, so I'm still hoping for an Indian summer.
All be it followed by winter rolling in.

Had the ice symbol on the car temp sensor come on the other day!
Was 30C in slovenia when mountain-biking, then drove back thru austria, where it was raining. Massive jams for tauern tunnel, so took the pass thru Obertauern, and thermometer went down to +4.5C at the top, and the snowflake symbol came on!
Winter's on its way

Don't get me wrong - when it's cold I wish it was warmer - when it's hot I wish it were cooler.
Although - as my holidays are mainly in the winter that's the time of year I'm most motivated about. So yes yes let's make the most of what's left of summer - but at the same time roll on a long snowy winter!!!
- and Wednesday night was cold enough to mist my house windows up a little - another good sign!

First sniff of winter here in Otley, Yorkshire today - really autumnal and the central heating clicked itself on. Hail yesterday, in mid-August.
No prospects of a winter holiday so all the more depressing.
To La Rosiere in a fortnight though so back to summer again!

We had the fire going the other night, but you can smell the difference in some evenings now, quite autumnal, and they are getting cooler.
