Prime Minister Vladimir Putin this week announced plans for new ski resorts stretching from the Black to the Caspian seas. He said that $65 million will be allocated this year to build a network of ski resorts in the North Caucasus....It is planned that the resorts will be able to accommodate up to 100,000 tourists at a time, and will create about 160,000 jobs in the region.
It is hoped that the project will attract private investors at home and abroad. However, private foreign investors have been wary about getting seriously involved in the North Caucasus because of the low-intensity guerilla war going on there. Law enforcement officials and Islamist militants kill one another almost every day in the region.
