Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tux Glacier / Mayrhofen in August??

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Myself and richard_sideways missed winter snow with arrival of the little man and are planning a summer snow fix - we did L2A last July but fancied a change this year. From experience do any fellow snowheads know if the Tux glacier tends to be slush or is it still morning ski/boardable in August??
Thank you!

I went to the Zillertal valley in mid-August 2005 and spent a couple of days on the Tux glacier.

Conditions will obviously vary a great deal, but when we were there, they weren't ideal - low cloud meant limited visibility and there was a strong wind making normal winter gear essential. It wasn't a slush fest as such, but it was just the very top runs that were open.

The terrain is certainly steeper than the glacier at L2A.

always29, what Ray Zorro, said, its normally ok in the early morning, top runs over by the Gefrorener wand very skiable, but it can also sometimes be icy, I skiied there last year, was admittedly later, sept, and there were patches of blue glacial ice pushing through, need to whack on some decent edges. You could also look at Kitzsteinhorn, but by August usually only the very top runs will be open, so again, limited skiing, and they usually shut down for 2 weeks revision work.

DAB, Nope it is one of only 3 glaciers in Euorpe left that open all year round! Like all glaciers it suffers from weather and high winds and can close with short notice but it is a great spot.

Fattes13, ah! I only ask as we were due to train up there with our local German club, but both times it was cancelled due to poor conditions.

always29, Depends on the weather...
I've skied there on the last day of July on 10cm fresh, kind of powdery, snow. I've also skied there at the end of Juy/beginning of August when the first hour is rock-like, the second hour is perfect and the third hour is porridge.
It's looking like it's in good condition at the moment, but who knows what the weather will bring between now and August!
I'd suggest staying in Mayrhofen, plan an activity holiday with a day or two of skiing/boarding and if the weather and snow is good, do more. There's loads to do around Mayrhofen in the summer - walking, biking, rafting.

DAB, Yeah I know some one that was in Saas last year for a week to get ready for a course that was on the 2nd week and he got 1 day on the hill due to conditions and weather he was not a happy bunny.

But the week of the course it was perfect conditions every day thats mother Nature for you!

It is the same with all the glaciers High winds tends to be the big one to close them during the year but hey you are 3,000 meters above sea level thats the way it is.

Fattes13, I was up at Kitz for a few days last week and although the snow cover is good, the locals are all complaining there is way too little for this time of the year, fingers crossed for the summer. Saas Fee is fantastic isn´t it!
