Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Google street view (sort of) for pistes ?

How is street-view done. I have seen the cars with the strange video cameras on the top on the TV.
Is there anything like this, but not car based.
OK, almost certainly not like a helmet-cam, but maybe a hand held version that would work on a piste

Any ideas anyone

Wayne, there's a skidoo-mounted version that Google used to create a 'Streetview' of the Olympic pistes in Whistler.

There was another system that someone on here posted about a couple of months ago, I think it was for an iphone app.

I can't remember what it was called in order to do the search though.

Toofy Grin Not really (maybe, sort of)

Just interest if it could be done. Will almost certainly come to nothing but...

OK, rephrase the question.
What sort of camera, if available at all, could produce something like street view on a website.

Someone must know.

Don't know what google use but its probably a bigger, better version of something like this - http://www.0-360.com/

But I think that just does a 360 shot of 1 position, the clever bit google do is stitching many shots together so you can move around.

... and where does the retrun come for Google having a pic of all of our houses on the internet? Is there perhaps a subscription service available for burglars based on a complex algorythum of postcode / house size/ car in the drive?

.... sorry got carried away, wrong forum. I'll just pop across to the Daily Mail website.

Looks way to complex for me. Think I'll just wait till it comes out somewhere.

Sure it would be possible, but it would be waaaay expensive for a pretty pointless novelty. However, google streetmap type thing of WHOLE mountains would be kool to plan offpsite routes with.

yep, whistler, here's all you need to know http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2010/02/street-view-hits-slopes-at-whistler.html

Completely useless of course, like the rest of street view (when did you use it for anything other than looking up your own house or somewhere else you already knew how to get to?), but great publicity.

Dr John, not completely useless. Twice now I have used it to get the details of companies I remembered passing, but not much more. Quick look on streetview gets company name (or restaurant - someone described it as 'just past the pub on x road - I go n look, get name, make booking) then google for phone etc. (or just dial the phone number on the sign in streetview.)

Also used to go and look at places I am going to a meeting at - helps with spacial orientation etc on arrival, how likely is local parking etc.

lampbus, fair point, but that hardly justifies taking pictures of every street in every city, and recording the wifi details while they're about it. Beware google, they are evil.
