Breckenridge - where to stay?

Could anyone recommend which 'peak' or part of town it is best to stay at?

I.e. fairly close to lifts/resturants so the car isn't needed ideally.

v1cky24, the main part of town is Peak 9 both for the main lifts, accommodation & restaurants. It's easy to get to other peaks. unless you intend to go to other resorts you won;t need a car (even then you can get busses, although we didn;t bother)

I stayed at the Lift View condos at The Village Resort this year which was very handy at the base of Peak 9 and right at the top end of the 'high street'. They are refurbing it this spring too so should be pretty swanky for next season Beaver Run resort is possibly better placed for more of a ski in ski out experience, although a bit further from town for any kind of night life beyond the strangest apres ski band I have ever seen at the Copper Top Cafe. To be honest, I think the resort bus service is pretty good although if you are planning on self catering I would recommend a car as the supermarket isn't very close to town. It will also give you the opportunity to visit Vail and Beaver Creek - both within 45 min drive and Keystone for a spot of night skiing (wrap up warm!)

Try River Mountain Lodge at the bottom of the 4 o clock run, very nice, corner 2 bed/3 bath units have a small private tub on the balcony. If you use the VRBO website it's a lot cheaper than booking through the complex managers.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Stay anywhere near a bar & get a car. Car hire is cheap in the states & there are more interesting mountains to ski nearby - A-Basin, Keystone, Beaver Creek, Vail, Copper.

We stayed in Liftside, at the bottom of the Quicksilver Super 6 lift on Peak 9. Very handy for the skiing and the town is pretty small so most places are convenient for most other places. The place needed a lick of paint (this was about 5 years ago, so it may have had one) and has the architectural style for which US condos are justly famous (it looks like a well appointed nuclear bunker inside), but it was perfectly comfortable. Practice holding your breath before you go; you'll be sleeping at 10 000 feet, which isn't that easy. You can buy oxygen enriched air cylinders in many shops if you need to. The height of the resort, as opposed to the runs, put us off returning. Staying somewhere lower and driving up might a good scheme, but there isn't anywhere that I know of nearby in which you'd particularly want to stay.

I am a little concerned about the altitude because when we went to Winter Park I suffered a bit (although I don't know if that was due to me having a cold or not?).

v1cky24, it takes people in different ways. I had no problems at all at Breck (apart from the odd headache - tylenol available everywhere!) but have been breathless at lower altitude

Been to Colorado a dozen times. Altitude problems only once. Like previous poster said, it's no respecter of persons - fit or fat seems to make no difference.
If you are worried, talk to your Dr & they'll write you up for some Diamox. Its only side effect is it makes carbonated drinks taste funny. Alternatively, try Gingko Biloba from a health shop. There's a very informative article about it at www.epicski.com

cardweg, I was reliably informed by a nurse on a lift in Breck that Viagra is a very good remedy for altitude sickness too - although I guess the side effects may be a little more obvious in some than making fizzy drinks taste funny! It could make for an interesting holiday though Wink

Another useful tip is to make sure you run the humidifier in your room or apartment whenever you can - the air is very dry in Colorado and it really helps in making you feel more confortable and avoiding the 'dry air cough'.

I don't know lodging in Breck but I'd say somewhere near the base of Peak 9 would be ideal. Breck is very high and does have the potential for altitude sickness. Last time I went to Colorado I asked my physician for a Diamox script. Also tried to stay hydrated, took ginko, ate carbs, tried not to drink too much, etc. On previous trips I've had some difficulty sleeping and headaches -- nothing serious or debilitating but ... Diomox does make you urinate a lot and does make carbonated beverages taste funny, but I had zero problems with sleeping or headaches. We've stayed in Frisco which is sort of a smaller version of Breck about 9 miles down the road. We had great fun skiing Breck and the town looks like a great base.

As others have said base of peak 9 is best. I've stayed in the Pine Ridge Condos twice and the Tannhauser Apts once both we great locations and you can ski to your door in the Pine Ridge.

I would only partially disagree with Lechbob about renting a car. Don't try to rent in Breckenridge - first of all, you can't. You'll have to go to Frisco for Hertz or Enterprise and they keep VERY little supply on hand. Spur of the moment is not an option! Better to take the free shuttle in Summit County or there's a paid shuttle to Vail - not sure of the $. I'd also agree with Scongie that Pine Ridge and the other older properties on 4 O'Clock Road tend to be larger and pretty much ski-in, but make sure to get an updated one. There's several shuttle stops nearby and tho you walk to Main St., you come out right in the middle of it. The building at the Village at Breckenridge mentioned by sarep is LiftSIDE and it's right next to ski school. The BEST location with small kids.
