Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Has anybody out there skied the Dachstein glacier near Schladming? If so what is it like? I will be in the area in late-April: is it worth a visit for a morning's skiing? Will it be open?
Is there a car park at the base? Ski-hire?
Thanks for your help!

Just got back from Schladming a week ago. Since it was perfect to ski on the lower slopes of Planai, we were not interested in the Glacier area, but I have collected their leaflets. It is open at the end of April. Parking is possible at the bottom station of the Gletscherbahn taking you up to 2700 metres.
I have talked to the local folks, the glacier area is not really large, 5 surface lifts on the top, usually great snow in April and the view is beautiful. Hiring equipment can not be a problem in one of the villages nearby.
More info on hiring:

I think it is worth a morning's skiing.

I skied on the glacier in August about four years ago, only one lift running so skiing limited, but still fun
We set off at 8.00am from Schladming I think, but it took us untill 10.00am to get onto the snow. That included stoping to pick up hire skis, but it's a long drive up to the bottom station, so give yourself plenty of time.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
