Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just back from a few days in the Chamonix area. Conditions meant we had to scale back our ambitions a bit but we still got in a couple of classic Chamonix days out plus some of the deepest fluffiest POW I have skied on the Grands Montets. No pics of that (vis was not great and it wasn't really a day for stopping and taking pics).

Thanks to our guide, Rick Marchant, who made the most of conditions and used his local knowledge to great advantage:

Col Crochu; Col Berard

Classic daytour accessed from the lifts of Le Brevent and ending up in Le Buet. We were the first up and the rapidly warming slopes meant that no-one followed us. Apparently this is a pretty unique experience.

View from the climb up to the first col - Sham-o-knee; the Lavacher bowl, an area twice the size of Jackson Hole where you can find fresh snow weeks after a storm...

we came from the obvious col on the skyline

heading up to Col Berard

nice turns off the Col

tracks coming off the Col

more fresh snow with a stunning backdrop

view from the bar at the bottom - the Aig Verte

Col du Passon from the Argentiere refuge

You can do this in a day from the first bin up Grands Montets but we elected to head over to the refuge once we had tired ourselves out in the abundant POW on the Thursday.

Skinning through the gloom on the Argentiere glacier - you can just about make out the hut right in the middle of the picture

New day dawns - stunning views of the Argentiere basin from the hut:

sun falls on the Aiguilles Rouges

into the climb - looking down on the snout of the Argentiere Glacier:

the climb up to the col is about 150m with crampons and ice axe. this got quite steep towards the top but it was nice firm snow:

some mug blocking the view:

and what a view:

Rick provides some rope assistance

ice formations on the Glacier du Tour

the glacier was totally tracked out Wink
