Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A warning...

... to any snowHeads heading off to the southern French Alps over the next couple of weeks...

We know Pra-Loup has closed, Allos is thinking about closing from this weekend, and Puy St Vincent is worried about getting through next week.

Haven't checked on the others but many have very little cover whether at resort level or at altitude.

Some of the levels today.... (resort/altitude):

Superdévoluy/La Joue - 40/80
Isola 2000 - 50/85
Les Orres - 45/65
Montgenèvre - 20/30
Orcières Merlette - 35/55
Pra-Loup - CLOSED
Puy St Vincent - 25/70
Vars/Risoul - 40/50
Sauze Supersauze - 25/25
Serre Chevalier - 15/40

All above depths provided by the resorts, so things must be bad...

Thanks for cheering us up PG wink
Am off to Tignes at the weekend so I guess that I can expect some degree of bus-ing in from other resorts?

Nick L, not from the above resorts (too far), and the remainder of the Tarentaise is ok at the moment, so you'll be ok (except for the rain wink )

NickL, the buses don't usually go that far, when conditions aren't good we usually see lots of instructors from other resorts in La Rosiere, which still has some of the best conditions in the Tarentaise. The rain is a bummer though.

David Traxvax, I have been trying to find out the opening of the Petit St Bernard pass. Is is still closed (since you are at La Rosiere I thought that you might know)

Nick L, it varies, last year it didn't open completely until the 10th June. The earliest it would open is late May and it usually shuts by mid November.

Most of the Austrian resorts are also melting and the low resorts are seeing rain.

Best go high to the glaciers. Kaprun and Hintertux look good but Sölden didn't see a great deal of snow this year.
Actually got a snow report to say Kaprun would be seeing new snow this week http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Kaprun.0to3top.shtml . If no crowds, pristine pistes and sunny days are your thing then the glaciers in April / May are the place to be.

Kaprun has 300 at top station, 184 at the apline centre (mid station)
Hintertux has 240 at top station.
Sölden has 170 at top station

Tauplitz still has over 4m base although it's probably not the best condition in the afternoons.

Most resorts appear to be closing in ca 2 weeks time but the glaciers stay open.

Frosty, spoke to him a few minutes ago, just getting on the Roches Noires chair, his description - like soup, it rained all last night. However, just about all runs are open and the local meteo is forecasting a drop in temperature by Friday, historically there is usually a dump late Mar/early Apr, so fingers crossed. At the moment it looks as if skiing finishes early afternoon, so long lunches on sunny terraces, can't be all bad. My daughter is not even skiing at the moment, although she took her snowboard out yesterday but went back early.

Snow depths updated daily by the resort show a drop of 5 cms since yesterday, to 180 cms at altitude, 90 cms at La Ros. Not too disastrous, but after a clear day today, heavy rain is forecast at 2200m and below on Thursday afternoon, all day Friday, clear Saturday, heavy rain again Sunday. The freeze level remains consistent at 2200m/2300m through to Sunday. Not good. Let's hope that cooler spell arrives next week!
