Just had the pleasure of skiing some Stormrider XXL and VXLs. XXLs were great when I was awake but did seem a little unforgiving if I tried to take it too easy on them. VXLs were shorter but felt amazing on piste, certainly fooled me into thinking the radius was much smaller than advertised.
My question is which to go for if I want to buy a pair? I skied the XXL in 178 but could only get the VXLs in 169 which was fun on piste but I wouldn't buy them that short for all-round use. I'm just wondering how much harder I would have to work longer VXLs; if the XXLs didn't tolerate laziness then will the VXLs be even worse at the same length? Strangely the VXLs seemed softer than the XXLs but I'm assuming that's just down to the length given that they are fatter?

I love ViXeLs but longer ones will punish you if you're inaccurate in bumps and they will chatter on frozen mank if your forward balance is off.
Demo them in the length you want to buy (and try also Kastle + Blizzard).

The more I read the more I wonder... I'm 6 foot, 73kg, I think I should ski something like a 178 although I have always tended to go about 170 (I'm pretty new at off piste). Would VXL at 169 do the biz in the soft stuff or will I regret it when I get a powder day? Not too many chances to demo them and the odds of good conditions when I do aren't that great...

Swiss Toby, Go bigger, much better on the pow days as it helps to avoid tip dive.

Swiss Toby, Remember the sparks (173?) and you said they sank in the powder, you need a 178 at least, my kehuas are 177 and they turn quick enough on piste.
or you could go 187, 105mm wide helixes, i know of a pair.....they would be fun in powder!

carroz, Just being lazy, the 169s were so much fun on piste, felt almost like slalom skis despite being 86mm in the middle.
It's the old dilemma: I'll only have one pair of skis and as I only get a couple of weeks' skiing a year over half my time tends to be spent on piste whether I like it or not so does it make sense to compromise piste fun for the occasional powder day? Ah, decisions decisions...

and awesome off piste provided I'm up to them. In difficult snow, he who hesitates can end up on his tails and subsequently picking himself out of the snow looking a bit silly.
