Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tignes end of April for beginner

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just wondering what the snow conditions are like at the end of April in Tignes? Will it be easy or hard to ski on "Spring snow" for a beginner?

Thanks in advance for any help

I went there at that time of year as a novice and it was ok, but I don't know if that was a typical year or not and it depends on the beginner too of course. It was getting very slushy by early afternoon, but the mornings were terrific.

I've been to Espace Killy for an end of season blast (usually May Day weekend) for the last 4 seasons.

Usually over 50% of the whole area is open, with skiing back to valley level at all areas of Tignes (including to Les Brevieres at 1500m on total mush by afternoon Smile ) and also back down to Val D'Isere. The highest runs - like the glaciers at Tignes and Le Fornet - will have winter snow conditions for most of the day - and we've experienced powder mornings on a couple of occasions.

Spring snow conditions are great fun - especially when pisted - but stay high, away from south facing runs and you'll have a great time. Take plenty of high factor sun cream - it is easy to get badly burned Embarassed Go for it - you'll have a great time!

PS:

There's some nice gentle skiing on the glacier at Tignes - including a beginners' rope tow, right at the top. So good snow guaranteed.

I've been for the last couple of years right at the end of April, and I've always had great snow in the morning and then yes complete slush in the afternoon. Trick is to get up early ski for a good while in the morning, have a latish lunch, and then just ski a little in the afternoon and enjoy the sun in the bars a bit earlier than you would normally. Another tip is to go up the mountain and not come down until you have to. The bowl between Tignes and Val d'Isere (Ski Tranquille) is great for beginners and highish so you'd be best off heading up there every day. Unfortunately the beginners tow on the glacier hasn't been open when I've been there at the end of April.

Enjoy Smile

Ta for that - must admit it hadn't occurred to me to check as I've seen it operating out of season in the autumn.

The begineer tows on the glacier are summer/autumn lifts ane are not open during the season. The nursery slopes still have over 1.0 meter of snow on them so should last a few more weeks wink
