Hi all,
Forgive me if there has been a previous thread on this topic, but I am considering buying a device that measures mileage covered and vertical skied.
I was in the gondola going up from La Tania and a group of guys were keeping track of how far they had skied that week and who had gone the fastest - one was not far off the national speed limit and was going to try and break through 70mph that day!!
What's best? Garmin? Navman? Anything else?
Does anyone have any thoughts or feedback on this?

If you're wanting speed, you won't get any level of accuracy in consumer products. (70mph is the speed that GS racers go at, not many recreational skiers hit it when on standard pistes)
Measuring vertical is fairly easy, and a sunnuto watch would be the best buy.

I use a basic GPS (Garmin 12) for mountaineering, if you store a few waypoints such as piste junctions, lift locations etc - they could be very handy for skiing in poor vis on a large resort. Pretty accurate as well - I've found the mph to be spot on compared with a calibrated odometer in a survey car doing 70.

MCBD, we have touched on this a couple of times but never really pinned down a 'best buy' so maybe your new thread will produce new recommendations. If you stick GPS into the site search engine you get 75 hits - not all relevant. This was probably the most informative previous thread

kuwait_ian, This may very well be a 'Blonde moment', but I have failed to elicit any hits at all from the search facility! I wanted to check any previous posts on travel insurance, rather than GPS. Any publications such as "Snowheads Search Facility for Idiots"? or tips for using search engine!

Bernard, OK I think I am using the default view of the search engine. I just stick gps (lower case - but it's not case sensitive AFAIK) in the top box, the keyword one, and press the search button. The little round radio button immediately below the box is selected. Make sure you leave author blank for general searching. Abracadabra - 75 matches.
For 'travel insurance' you'd try entering travel and insurance ------ typing the word 'and' in between 'travel' and 'insurance' and I get 104 matches.
The search engine is not perfect - it only works on key words it has extracted from threads. Very common words are ignored. I don't think there is anything about using it in the Users Manual. Hope this helps.

kuwait_ian, Thanks! We have lift-off!!! I was entering keywords in the 'Author' box. The 'keyword' box having the caption "May your search bring all U desire". This confused me momentarily (for about two weeks!) as I thought it was a constant. "We are on the pig's back now!"

in the gliding world we log gps signals and use an accurate +/-10m (at worst) baragraph to record height against time. The combination of gps (good accuracy in lat and long but poor in height) and baragraph (good in err height) gives good results.
i've often pondered using my system http://www.lxnavigation.si/avionics/colibri.php whilst skiing but they are not cheap £700 or so and are fragile (would not withstand a moderate fall or smack getting on a chair etc.
Using software like www.seeyou.ws you can get 3d views of your flights/days skiing.

I brought a Navman. Great fun it says it measures fairly accurately. I manged to get up 75 kmhr going down the slope. It will tell you your height and distnace skied. Obviously hard to say how accurate it is. It will not tell you were you are it is just for fun. Had a few competitions ging down the slpe to see who could get fastest. The main problme wiht the Navman is that it is only supposed to go -10 degrees can be a problem when skiing!

If I was on a lift with someone wanting to go faster than 70 mph on the piste in the 3 valleys I would see where they are going and go the other way. 40 mph is seems fast to me if there are other people around. Perhaps the fun parks are the place to workout the 'gps'. There are normally quiet with fairly good skiers about with quite good schussing zones in the periphery.
Also I don't think my GPS takes account of the vertical in the speed calculation although it states your elevation.

We just got a box of the Navman A300s delivered to j2ski; they look quite neat but I've not tried one out yet. Off to France on Friday so will take one along for a play... wonder how well the GPS works in the chunnel?  I'll post a full review once I've used it for a day or two (so long as the kids don't wear it out on the autoroute...).
Anyone else on the, er, 03:28 (doh! ...but at least we'll be ahead of the traffic!)?

I've recently bought a GPS/pocket PC thingy from Medion. I've been after a replacement for my old psion5 for a while and the addition of GPS built in tipped the scales for me. It should get a good run out at the EOSB, the route planner will get me there and then a bit of magic with a piste map and a couple of reference points ought to work as an electronic piste map.
One thing it has taught me so far is that the speedo in my van consistently reads 10% over and that when the nice lady in it says turn left in a hundred yards she's usually right.
