You obviously haven't tried any of the other magazines if you believe their gear guides are remotely the "biggest load of shite around".
They certainly aren't anywhere near perfect, but they are about the best (or least bad) of the ski magazines on that front.

What is "Fall Line Skiing [and Snowboarding] magazine"? Does it really exist? Where is it sold? I have looked in magazine shops and never seen it. Must admit that it was last winter when I looked, because it seemed to be a mythical magazine I gave up and have not looked this winter. |
It is in most reasonable sized high street WH Smithshops (certainly available in both of the ones I regularly visit - Merthyr Tydfil & Cheltenham).
It was available in Borders too, until they closed

A small paragraph on each ski laden with adjectives with no details of the conditions, testers or length tested and often at odds with reviews from actual skiers online is the best we have? Probably true actually.

And the other thing that winds me up is that they just highlight the waist widths. No tip or tail measurements.
If Fall Line are reading sort that out please.

Got my copy this morning. No stickers, from comments here it looks like subscribers haven't got these; a sneaky way to save money? I'd prefer it as a ski only mag but if it's a choice of merging or nothing then I'd prefer this. If the balance changed to much more boarding though I'd probably cancel.

Just back from the ski test. Stickers point noted - email kerry@fall-line.co.uk with your address and you'll get some sent through. There were easily enough sent to the printers but sometimes runs get missed. I'll find out what happened. We have plenty in the office.
Document is mainly web but gets the tagline and content in the revised magazine after surveying existing subscribers. Over 28s tended to prefer Fall-Line if they knew about it and under 30s are dropping out of reading mags at a fair lick; specialist mags are a bit of an exception but snowboarding has had a couple of tough years.
We don't expect to get any snowboard ads; we're putting it in because in every survey we've done over the past seven years the vast majority of readers say they ski with snowboarders, about 60% either do both or have snowboarded and around 15% of the readers mainly snowboard. Most family readers have a mix of skiers and riders, so they seemed quite pleased.
It's got an additional 16 pages to cover the extra gear and WTF images for snowboarding, and the existing snowboard readers say they like the travel and relevant clothing reviews, so that'll stay the same.
Other points absorbed. It's a bit late now, but I'll follow the thread and respond. Any major queries feel free to contact me - dickie@fall-line.co.uk

fallliner, nice to see that you take time to read and answer this thread .I'm a new subscriber to the mag . I like it because the writting is informal and light hearted , not too tecky , although can't see myself doing an iron cross jump!!!!!!
And as for the boarding bit , doesn't bother me ! Snow is still snow.

Excellent fallliner.
James Stentiford may be a great rider, but he's certainly not a great writer.
Wasted opportunity with the Japan story. Did he even visit? 16 year old green as grass Aussie boys can find the Niseko nightlife.
On a very plus side, great pics and coverage of the Scottish winter. More of that please.

Mike Pow, you've neatly nailed one of the main issues with travel writing. In a limited time trip we can generally nail one or the other; sometimes both if we find the right 'guides'. Also the more serious riders might make some noise about finding nightlife but they're generally tucked up pretty early. Bless. Rather like me, but without the ability.
We are so chuffed to be running great Scottish stories this winter - as half the Scottish ski industry set off last week for Italy and the ski test there were a lot of quizzical expressions as they drove past metres of the snow to find some... snow to test skis on. If we could have predicted it, we've have gone to Scotland.

Fair enough.
One other point, loads of info and links for the resorts you highlighted in Europe. Nothing for the Japan feature.????
Can you please add the turn radius of the tested ski length and the tip and tail measurements for the upoming reviews. Thanks.

Why do no airport WH Smiths stock Fall Line?! They're all filled with different varieties of yachting magazines (liek over 6 different ones), fishing and MTB - surely stocking a ski magazine in the winter when many people are flying off to the Alps makes sense?!

clarky999, Found that the other week when waiting for outLaws to arrive 3 hours late from Spain - Gatwick WHSmiths had 3 copies of Daily Mail Ski and Snowboard magazine/snowshow advert from JANUARY and nothing else! Well catered if i want to bake a cake or paint my house or trim my poodle, all those other traditional holiday activities....

clarky999, as Richard says above that Daily Mail mag is the one I see most frequently, including in UK airports. I dunno what the deal is with magazine distribution but Fall Line seems to have a much more limited distribution network as is suggested by the numbers of people on here who complain that they can't find it at their local newsagent despite looking hard for it as a result of recommendation here.
Strikes me FL might be missing a trick or two somewhere although it might be the case that the nature of the UK market is such that it's the Daily Mail's effort that's more popular, after all in reality it's a glorified travel and kit mag for people who go on ski holidays whereas Fall Line is a magazine for skiers (and now boarders) if you get the distinction I'm making!
Craziest thing is though that it's invariably the DM thing I see in the Aviemore Tescos not Fall Line, all power to them for being one of the only Tescos (if not the only one) I've seen in the UK to stock a ski mag but for goodness sake they might stock the right one ... although of course FL is available next door in Nevisport and in the other ski shops along the road where I guess the DM effort wouldn't get a look in lol!

Must be a central contract, because DMS&S is available in Aberdare Tesco here in S Wales

AFAIK, it's down to each WHSmiths to order up their own magazine requirements. My local one (Sutton) is actually well stocked with snow-pron mags - where i used to find Document and Snowboard UK and can still find Fallline, Whitelines and OnBoard.

Distribution causes frequent gnashing of teeth in the office. Fall-Line will be in airports and stations etc next season because a) we think it'll sell and therefore b) we have given them quite a lot of money to stock us...
If there are shops not stocking the mag, let us know. If we know there are stores where people are looking for Fall-Line, we'll get it in. We do suggest that ski areas might be a good idea, but the magazine trade works in an odd fashion at times.

It's not unheard of for some publishers to arrange to have mags on certain strategic shelves by literally getting someone to walk in and put a dozen copies there - kind of reverse shoplifting. You always know when it's happened... present mag at the till and it won't scan.

Tesco also requires a wad of cash to stock a magazine. Much easier to support the local newsagent round the corner because they can respond within a month and hold a mag for you.
Not that anything is happening here until September. I'm off to sleep under a pile of leaves. Mmmm, yawn, that was nice. Now I'd better wake up and start making our new(ish) Outdoor Adventure Mag.
