Poster: A snowHead

Planning a long weekend trip to scotland this easter and cant decide which ski resort is best suited. It will be a party of 4,with two intermediates and two beginners. Looking for a wide range of skiing and was wondering which would be most suitable.
cheers

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I wouldnt aim for any particular area due to the variable nature of our weather but try and stay within easy driving distance of several of them. Newtonmore / Kingussie gets you within easy striking distance of Cairngorm, Glenshee and Nevis.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I agree with prog99, however if you want any sort of apres you might be best to head for Aviemore. This would leave you hoping that the Cairngorms are still in good nick, which liiks odds on at the moment.

Englishpowder, Follow the advice from prog99, Glenshee would probably be best for beginners (they have a flat area). the Lecht is better for them but probably not so good for the intermediates and you're a bit out on a limb there.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Englishpowder, Glenshee is the best option IMHO.
Try getting accommodation in Braemar if you can as the trip up from Blairgowrie can be a bit of a slog if there is a lot of traffic! The trip round from the Spey valley can also be a PITA
Enjoy, the skiing is fantastic when they have the amounts of snow they are reporting!

I agrtee, Glenshee is best for a mixed party of beginners and intermediates, and Braemar is the best place to stay. The Lecht is great for beginners, but not particularly inrteresting aside from that. I learnt to ski on Cairngorm, back in the day, and still have a great affection for the place. It seems to work for all grades of skiers, and Aviemore has a good range of facilities and accomodation.

Thanks for all the advice, any opinions on which area is better for intermediate/advanced? Sitting here with a broken collar bone Scotland is my last chance to ski this year!!

Had a lovely day in Glenshee two weeks ago - blue skies, good snow cover and few rocks! Could have been in the Alps. Drove from Blaigowerie which is about an hour. Enjoy!

Again, it depends on whats open
If the back corries are open and looks like fun then for me I'd go to Nevis Range. Theres plenty of scope on the rest of the mountain for intermediates. Also tends to be quieter than the other places.
If *ALL* of Cairngorm is open then its good fun. THe ciste, west wall area are great for those with a bit more experience and given the snow conditions at the moment are a lot of fun. However it gets very , very busy and all it takes is the funicular to break down for major queues to build up at the bottom.
Glenshee probably has the most variety, again if all the lifts are open then it spreads the crowds out, they aren't reliant on just one or two lifts to get folk away from the base station. Glas Maol and the tiger are good for advanced skiers. Theres loads for beginners and intermediates. Great views as well to the southern cairngorms.
Glencoe is essentially a big unpisted playground. It has (correct me if I'm wrong) the steepest run in scotland with the flypaper. Spring run with lots of fresh is probably one of my favourite runs in scotland. I'd probably not take a beginner here, there are pisted runs but its not really what it all about.

Agree with all of prog99's post above. Will add that hopefully some areas will stay open well into May this year so plenty time yet.

Having now actually taken someone who turned out to be a real beginner to Nevis & Glencoe; in fact Glencoe is probably better for beginner skiers - 3 green runs - 1 long & accessible off a chairlift. If progressing to blues - you can then access most of the mountain (well the whole skiers left - nearly). Not true at Nevis where only reds connect the bottom of the Summit to the top of the Quad. He also got a lesson which transformed his skiing from speed...crash...speed (no) style to controlled turns on greens & blues for £5 more than ski & boot hire only. Hopefully there are plans for improvements to the beginner area in future years according to my source on the chairlift (who is beyond reproach).
