Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hard or soft!!!!!!!!

In a fit of temper last night I have broken the zip on my large suitcase. I'm going to Canada next week, should I buy a suitcase or a large soft holdall. A heavey case seems to use up too much of the all to valuable bagage allowance.

Any thoughts???

Soft hold all every time. Have to honeslty say they dont last as long as one might hope, but are so useful, hold so much, and as you say, weigh less.
I get the big hold alls with extendable handle and wheels from S&R (not meant as a plug!).

By the way, if you are an SCGB memeber, you should have vouchers for BOGOF on S&R luggage.

get a backpack. we've used them everytime we travel for years and it makes life very easy (they've been to canada, new zealand and round europe, no problems)
trick we use is we put them in a big orange surval bag at the airport, then in a pack safe wire bag. means they can't be slashed or damages, the survival bags keep water proof and easy to spot at the other end.
just a thought

I have seen luggage handlers at work. It is common for luggage to get wet when being unloaded during wet weather. Hard would be my choice. Weight should not be an issue, whatever you are taking, take half of it out, you will NOT miss it.

On our summer holiday this year (oct/nov!) we went for 2 weeks and took one suitcas and a small "wheelie" suitcase with a pull out handle. This was for 2 adults and 2 kids. Similar family on our transfer mini bus had 4 huge cases. They admitted to using about a third of the gear. Lots to pack, lots to carry, lots to unpack, lots of hassle

A large soft holdall with wheels is a good bet (S&R do one for around £90 (!) but there must be cheaper ones).

There are plenty of large soft packs with backpack harnesses which zip away (careful with those zips, mind). We don't use them for skiing, as there's rarely much carting about involved, but they're great when there is.

just bought a fantastic soft bag by Animal - two big compartments and on wheels with pull out handle - £90

(bought a case by them over a year ago - was dubious about quality from them as they're not a luggage company but a but its been bashed so much in a year and is still in amazing shape...)

We bought new cases last year - good make - on offer - soft with the pull out wheely handles... And they are specifically "lightweight"
Bought quite a big one and a medium one - thinking that one big one was less to carry if we only took one....
Used the big one last hol -crammed everything in - and were told on check in that although we were below weight limit for 2 people - our case was right on the border of what they will accept for the weight limit per CASE. (I didnt know there was a limit per case - but I suppose it makes sense that the baggage handlers dont want to break their backs!)
So whatever you buy - dont get one that is too big!!... I wish now I had just got 2 medium sized ones. xx

I always use a Salamon soft holdall with a extendable handle and wheels. You can fit loads in them, and they match my ski bag and boot bag as well. Yes, call me a fashion victim. Even my OH's kit is the same. We're like a red bag explosion when we arrive at any hotel - 6 Salamon bags in bright red - perhaps there could be a sponsorship deal in this for me Laughing

I have a expedition bag and it is bomb proof. Plus you can carry it like a ruck sack if need be. A very good solution for me.

I would normally only ever use a rucksack, but for skiing I use a huge soft holdall with wheels. It's great & I only expected it to last for a couple of years as it only cost £25 from Blacks, but I've had it about 5 years now & it still looks brand new. The salesman was trying to talk me into a very expensive Berghaus version when I bought it - couldn't really see the advantage of the extra expense though.

rob and sharon, you are kidding, surely! Shocked
Crickey, there's no need for THAT kind of heathen carry-on when it comes to Northern Hemisphere skiing. You're not lugging the case around every day all week, after all. You're only going to be taking it off the airport carousel, moving it to yr transfer transport and thence to yr hotel room on arrival day (barely a few metres each time....), and reversing that on departure day!!!!

Nice large soft-type wheelie suitcase with extending pull-along handle does fine. I sling my boot bag over the handle and pull the lot along behind me - voila, no heavy lifting Toofy Grin Got myself a bog-standard one from Debenhams, but at check-in I've frequently passed large-ish purpose-built soft holdall pull-alongs from S&R, Salomon, and Rossi and am quite keen on that as my next luggage purchase.

If your buying big then remember that anything over 32kg (less at some places) will neeed to be unpacked to reduce the weight belw that level. also if you take 2 cases andone is lost then at least you will have something to wear

32Kg! I doubt we take that much between the 3 of us and that includes boots and skis. Just how much does a snowHeads t-shirt and a pair of jeans weigh?

Ken Lingwood, I have had a similar specification requirement, see here;

An informed and kindly SnowHead suggested this piece of Victorinox luggage;

http://www.luggageonline.com/product.cfm?productID=2825&catID=27&brandID=0&tab=4

I am now the beaming and proud owner of same and have just returned from it's first field trip.

10/10 for performance! Its a case, it's a wheely case and it's a back pack. (The back straps pack away into a zipped compartment which avoid it's having to be put onto the out of gauge luggage section) The front compartment takes a pair of ski boots and leaves the main compartment for life's other possessions. It's available in the UK. If it's of interest let me know and I will dig out the details of the supplier.

kuwait_ian, That Victorinox bag is a cousin of mine! The difference is the one you mentioned in your earlier thread, the 26" Trek Pack Plus, has a detachable docking, day pack. I didn't need this, already having a day backpack for skiing. The Upright Backpack, which I purchased has a generous fitted, front compartment in place of this removable day pack. This fits a pair of ski boots with plenty room to spare. Thus everything fits in Backpack - Backpack on back, skis in hand - Forward....

I've just ordered a new Rossi holdall from Outdoor Warehouse as my boot bag fell apart on our last trip. Let you know on Tuesday when it's delivered. Has pockets either end for ski boots.

Thank you one and all. However, I think I've found the answer and I've been tripping over it for months now. My cricket bag, which has I think more than enough capacity and I can wheel it. Although, did have a bit of a shock to find my cricket kit and a damp and very unpleasent towel together with half a dozen pairs of pants and numerous odd socks. Still a good airing (the bag not my pants)should do the trick and might save me the best part of £ 100.00.

Ken Lingwood, Took one of the kids to cricket nets last night and thought what a good travel bag the adult cricket bags would make!! How ironic

Skis by Duncan Fearnley, Kookaburra ski boots.. that would cause great confusion in our house. We keep our ski gear and our cricket gear in bags in the same room. Jon and I could easily turn up for a match with skis....

I am not sure how strict they really are on baggage allowance, I came back from Oz recently with over 30 kilos with a 20 kilo limit. I seems to only be an issue for the likes of Ryanair to make money. Maybe ask your airline.

to be completly fair you should weigh the person and the luggage for an overall weight limit..
this would have the added benefit of seeing the weedy scrawnsters in the group having to lug all the fat boys gear up to the weighing station

Helen Beaumont, Have a great trip to Whistler - hope the 'Snow-God' is kind to you! I have some friends there at the moment. In fact I should be there with them until March 24th but had to cancel!!! De-brief on the ROSSI Holdall when you get back!

Bernard Condon, late I know, but was very impressed with the Rossi holdall. End pockets took my ski boots and my hiking boots (I do have v small feet though). Main compartment was big enough for all my gear for 10-11 days and some left over. I even had room to put my ski jacket on the top. Only negtive point would be the zips havent got a hole through for a padlock, only bits of cord which could easily be cut.
Other than that, 1st class.

I started a similar thread a while ago. Subsequently I bough a 'Deluxe Weekend Holdall withm wheels' from S+R, and it was definitely worth it. It's huge, relatively cheap, sturdy ... good stuff. Would definitley reccomend. Far better than a suitcase as its much easier to pack and generally a bit lighter. Very Happy
