Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

St Gervais and iPhone GPS

Just returned from a week at Saint Gervais and I though I would share this with you...

I tracked my skiing for a little 3 hours (including lifts hence some of the data will be inaccurate - calories etc) using the 'runkeeper' application which you can get for free or buy the pro version for around £6. I used the pro but I think the basic works just as good. Basically just draws a track on google maps of where I've been then at the bottom you can hover over the speed/distance/elevation graph and it'll show the route. You can tell from that also when I've been skiing as the speed goes up and elevation drops off and vice-versa for lifts. There's a couple of images I took on there too from the location its pinned to.

I though it was pretty cool, nice little novelty - Give it a go if you have an iPhone Wink

Using the GPS alone doesn't cost just ensure you turn 'Location services' in Settings>General to 'off' and in the app turn 'send location data' to 'off' also. It then tracks where you've been and you upload the data on a Wifi connection somewhere in resort or when you get back home. This is what I did and incurred no charges Very Happy

We did this last year in the 3V with Nokia Sports tracker on an N95. For the entire day.
It mapped the entire day out and we exported it to google earth..
We had a long fast day and covered 55miles!
Very geeky but it's got to be done.... Toofy Grin

2 Questions

1) Who would have charged you if you had not done this?
2) Does it flatten the battery?

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

Your network (in my case 02)would charge around £3 per MB for data roaming. I.e using 3G or Edge to upload data from the app (runkeeper) to the Internet. I'd image it would also try to use location services through triangulation which would add to data charges?

After around 4 hours of use the battery warnings begin to kick in. I'm using a 3GS so a 3G may be slightly less but I doubt it would it would be much different.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

You can turn off data roaming and still use the gps. Then no data costs.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

ringingmaster, I've used the GPS on an iPhone 3G for cycling - it does eat into your battery a fair amount. With one programme it actually only lasted about 90 mins. There's another app called iSportstracker which you can put the phone into sleep mode so it saves a bit of battery life, but I found that marginal.

I'd much rather keep the phone so it can make calls, so very rarely use the GPS. I do however, have a Garmin GPS that I use for running and cycling, I've also taken it skiing, which is cool. In fact the more geeky among you should check out...... http://www.snowheads.co.uk/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=42481

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
Also worth knowing that the iPhone GPS uses the telephone network to aid with the triangulation of satellites (basically tells the phone where to look for the satellites). Therefore if you do turn off the network data settings and the GPS signal is poor (usually heavily wooded areas, valleys, in between tall buildings) it can drop the GPS signal easier.

Cool, will have to look up the App. I took my cheapo garmin out for a 9-2pm slushy day in April and me and a mate clock 33 miles with a top speed of over 40mph.... scary!, but makes you realise how mad it must be on a downhill race at double that! Might give a while around the Grand Massif next week.

hammerite, If you want to use a GPS Tracking system on an iPhone that will last up to 9 hours (I say up to 9 hours because it depends on Battery condition, temperature and what else is turned on on the phone), then you could use Ski Tracks. Just so you know I am part of the team who developed Ski Tracks for the iPhone and our specific requirement was to be able to Track all day without killing the battery - after all what's the point of only tracking for 90 minutes.

For more information goto http://www.corecoders.com/CoreCoders/skitracks.html

There is a free version for you to have a go and see how it works.

corecoders, I have bought ski tracks before, so it is on my iphone4. is there any data charge when using it?
If so can this be turned off and what features will that disable?
Thanks

I see that this is an old thread but seems relevent....

I've recently got a new iPhone and have downloaded the Saint Gervais app from the app store. On there, there's an option for "My ski" and this tracks your routes, altitudes and speeds throughout the day.

As others have mentioned, just make sure that you've turned off all your roaming settings and it'll just use GPS which will be free.

I'm gonna try it on our trip to St Gervais in January! snowHead
