Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all,
Having tried the search facility - it's been whirring away for quite a while now with no sign of providing results. So apologies for going over old ground. (And hopefully now, none of you will post helpfully telling me to try the inappropriately named "search" facility!)
I need to leave my car at Geneva airport for about a week and a half. Can anyone please suggest cheap or free parking that I could use that is roughly within 10 mins march of the airport.
Thanks muchly,
CP

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

cp1000, because of slovenly posting discipline, uncorrected by the mods and admin, the form search engine is pretty much wrecked. However, entering your query into Google, followed by site:snowheads.com will work for all sections open to the general public (so not for sections like 'Apres'). In your case free car parking near Geneva airport site:snowheads.com would have got you want you wanted quickly.

altis, Cheers - you are an excellent search facility
achilles, Thanks - maybe you could persuade admin to put your advice on the search page?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

achilles, The search facility works quite well, if you just use it properly.
And "slovenly posting discipline" (which I know is a bugbear of yours, but SH is actually one of the better forumns around in that respect) makes anything returned by Google just as bad as what is returned by the forum search.

alex_heney, I fond the forum search tool hopeless - it all too often either locks up (as it did for cp1000) or simply does not give a return for an item that is actually available. And of course it is little use searching by section, when posters have used a scatter-gun approach to where they post. For some reason, Google does work a lot better. IME it usually brings up what you want on the first page. I guess the Google algorithm is a lot better than phBB's.
I don't know what forums you use, but IME the web development forums, AVforums, pprune and Coppermine - the other main forums I use - are leagues better with regard to posting discipline.

achilles, I rarely find it locks up (although it has happened occasionally in the past).
Putting in your search term as above returns 12 results, all reasonably valid, if you choose the "use all terms" and the "Search topic title and message text" options.
Putting it into Google returns 88 results, but a lot of those are not valid. If you put quotes around "free car parking" it only returns 6 results, all reasonably valid.
In the forum search, leaving the first option set to the default "use any terms or use query as entered" returns 42924 results, most of which are no use, while leaving the 2nd option set to the default "Search topic title only" returns no results.
I do think the search facility should default to "search topic title and message text", but that is part of what I mean by "if you just use it properly".
Mind you, I would hope that Google, which is a specialist search engine, would have a better algorithm than something "tacked on" to a forum system.

cp1000, The cheapest car park I could find at Geneva airport was P22 on the French side, it is the small outdoor car park on the right hand side just before the car rental return area. It cost me just under £60 for 8 days parking, it may be cheaper if you can book it online.
Another option is to park at a train station near to Geneva with frequent train services. I use Culoz which is 20 minutes north of Chambery and has an hourly service to Geneva, Bellegarde also has frequent train services and is just off the A40.
