Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

US/Canada recommendation for family Xmas/NewYear skiing

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Me and Mrs Higs have never skied in the US or Canada but thinking about it for next winter - possible a fortnight for Xmas and New Year.
We'll have three kids with us who will want lessons.

Ideally we want inexpensive, varied skiing, spacious accomodation close to the piste with guaranteed fresh snow every night with clear blue skies every day.

Not fussed about self-catering or catered - I enjoy cooking and I enjoy being cooked for.

I know it's a very open question but any recommendations?

Kimberley for One of the weeks, you would get bored for any longer, then maybe Banff?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Higs, At Canada's lattitudes I wouldnt have thought you would get too much daylight at that time of year Confused Especially in the mountains Smile

I would have thought the USA would have been better, probably Colorado resorts, Utah or even California. The downside to going that time of year is they get very busy at christmas.

Have fun wherreever you decide Madeye-Smiley

I'd recommend Lake Tahoe (California/Nevada). The advantage is that there's more than a dozen resorts within a reasonable drive of somewhere central. Since N. American resorts are much smaller (in general) than European resorts, this will give you variety to keep you occupied for two weeks. Assuming you want to keep the kids away from casinos, the California side would be better than Nevada. It would probably save money to base yourself in a town (e.g Tahoe City or even Truckee) with ready access to resorts such as Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley.

Bones,

Not that true, in Albertan mountains days are longer than in UK in mid winter. Its often clear blue skies and sunny, but cold with it. Same would certainly be true of resorts that have mountain time in BC, so Fernie, KH etc. WE just went to Sun EPaks for New Year and darkness isn't one of my memories!!!

Higs,
Not a clue about US but could consider a Streamboat first week, Breckenridge second combo. We had bitterly cold temps when we did that combo at same time of year. As bad as the worst we have experienced in Canada. Our eyes froze.

I have more experience in Canada than US and have skied Panorama, Kimberley and Sun Peaks at that time of year. Wouldn't recommend Kimberley at New Year - very busy, queues etc. Nowhere to eat on mountain and only one route in and out of village.

Would recommend the following combos:

Something and Fernie (eg Castle, Whitefish, Panorama or Kimberley if you insist, or maybe even Silver in Idaho (checkout their water park) or Schweitzer.

Two of Big White, Silver Star, Sun Peaks. All have good other facilities for kids to keep occupied in evening, eg skating, tubing etc. All have good qulaity fairly spacious condos close to piste.

Have been to lots of western canada resorts and have kids , so ask away..............
