Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Waxing skis- How hot to get the bases

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
When you wax your skis, how hot should you get the bases without risking base burn?

I use a normal iron and set the iron hot enough for the wax to smoke, then wind the temperature back just enough that you get a little wisp of smoke as you lift it from the base as per the Dominator website.

Then when ironing the bases i drip wax along the length of the ski and then iron it into the base.

Question is exactly how long should you iron it into the base for and how hot should the top sheet get?

I iron the bases long enough that the wax takes a minute or so to go waxy (as opposed to clear and molten) after the iron has been removed. This means that the ski reverses it's camber somewhat as the base expands and in the areas where the ski is thinner the top sheet gets warm/hot to the touch.

I'm concerned that i'm not getting the bases hot enough for proper absorption because i'm worried about burning the bases. Or am i doing it correctly?

ski, i'm sure he means waking them. Skis can get pretty tired if they're made to work too hard! Depends on overall condition though!

Doh! Edited title!

Comprex- too hot because of the time it takes the wax to solidify or because the wisp of smoke?

Wisp of smoke.

There's really no need to go that high with the iron, lower temps + longer time works nicely.

With fluoros, that wisp -is- toxic.

Right, so iron temp down a bit further.

What about the amount of heat going into the bases? Am I getting them hot enough or too hot?

Total heat reads fine to me. Well-made skis should thrive on it.

On cheap ones, you might start peeling up base material, but who cares?

I think you're supposed to leave a few inches of melted wax behind the iron and that's about the right temperature to heat the base (wax should not be smoking when you test it out by touching it to the iron).
...then just do a few passes. I do 3 or 4.

Cool. That's reassured me that i'm doing it right though i will turn the temperature down a touch.

The wisp of smoke temperature gauge is how dominator (and i'm using dominator zoom) says the temperature should be judged on its website! No comment from them about toxic fumes.....
