Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val d'Isere Feb 10

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi, for those going to Val d'Isere, I hope this is useful;
Snow is nice (I'm a standard Brit "intermediate" so take with pinch of salt) although a little grippy in the afternoon on the flat. It's VERY cold with numbers of -15 and-25 at the top being thrown around. I normally ski in April so have never been so cold skiing. (take gimp mask and thermals!)
Blue skies today but started snowing gently as the lifts closed - a cm already and should be nice tomorrow.
Finally, we ordered skis over web via Skiset from a Brit shop called Snowberry. This shop seems to be exclusively run by Brits and they are good and helpful and let you leave skis with them. Recommend them! If on a budget though, immediately opposite is a forlorn French shop called Ski Republic who are doing 2 for 1 rental with sport skis@e111 and performance@e143. Cheaper than we paid but I couldn't tell you if they are any good.

Hope this helps someone! Smile

Snow is always nice.

How many times did you face plant?

Here is the website for Snowberry, apparently voted best Ski shop in Europe 2009. Who voted and how many of them have used an array of ski shops is unknown Happy

Cool! Somebody is reading this! Smile

No faceplants yet, though not through any skill. The new snow was lovely and it started snowing again this evening - and even harder! -22 today (heatwave!) and wasn't cold. (I stuck a tracksuit under my salopettes and added insulation to my boots. Seemed to work!). The blues were quite busy going back into the centre. I'd found some empty blacks earlier in the day so thought I'd dodge the final blue by taking the black. Which was lovely until I found myself at the top of a vast mogul field. OMG! :-O Faceplant potential or what! Made it down though, no falls and I didn't cry or shout for Mummy once. Smile Fell over on the bit were it turns blue instead, pride coming before a fall. (No-one saw so it doesn't count...)

There is an award in the window of Snowberry and you know, I could believe it is genuine. They do seeem very good.

Tignes was also lovely today but the wind picked up in the afternoon which made things less comfortable back in Val d'.

Had a "how much?!" moment yesterday - e3.20 for a can of diet coke! Unbelievable! That said, I have found a Spar and a Casino supermarket where things are still pricey but less so.

Not much of a report but happy to find things out if people are coming and have questions.

Isn't it? Oh well... Care to explain?

Lovely sking in Val and Tignes with some slopes scoured by the high winds at the top. A little icy in those places but otherwise sunny and very nice today.

Wobbler, Ski Republic is a British company that famously had their stores attacked in France by the established franchisees.

I seem to have a few friends out skiing at the moment and they are all reporting excellent conditions.

Actually that is tosh what I just wrote in terms of them being a British company. Ski Republic is owned by Favre Sports Group http://www.favresportsgroup.com/ who are based in France from what I can make out. Favre Sports Group was started and is headed up by a French-Australian duo. When Ski Republic (the word Republic is an English spelling) it was heavily targetted at British skiers, hence the perception at the time that it was a British company or certainly a non-French one! Here is also an article on how it got started.. http://www.cnbcmagazine.com/story/sliding-market/372/1/ I guess things have settled down a bit in terms of the attacks.

So now we know! Very Happy

The chaps in the shop were both forlorn and French, hence my assumption. Cheap ski hire regardless. Smile

Sunny day today with lovely skiing. Spent most of my time in Tigne and again, was lovely. Clouding over now so may get a top-up... Icy in areas. Was worried that my skis aren't gripping too well on it. They are the cheapest hire ones - should I lump it or should I ask the shop to check? I don't know what the done thing is? (maybe I should get some technique first. Wink )

It doesn't matter how sharp your edges are, they will not grip on ice!!! Just find slip over it on and find the snow.

Some shops are not overly keen on taking ski's back in for a service half way through a week. But if Snowberry are the best Ski shop in Europe 2009, then I would take them down every night Madeye-Smiley Toofy Grin

Seriously though, I would probably take them in mid-week for a tune and wax if it was a good shop. It won't help with the ice but it will help in general.

Still no face plants? Let yourself go girl. You are a girl aren't you?
