Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski carrier to fit Renault Espace integral roof bars??

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Anyone know which type of ski carrier will fit the Espace's own roof bars. The Thule one won't. OH has seen one called Atera Nova and is wondering if that one will, he seems pretty sure but maybe someone can advise? Thanks.

sarah, I use a Thule Ski Box on the Espace Roof Rails if I'm going on a long trip, other than that I can get 4 pairs of skis between the seats on the inside. My Espace is a 6 seater version.
I think the problem with fitting a normal ski rack is the fact that the Espace rails are arched, not flat bars.

Spyderman, thanks! Ours is the Grand Espace 7 seats but we can take one out as we don't need them all and fit them on the inside no probs, we've done that before. We were thinking of a carrier so we could put the skis on that after use in and around resort rather than put wet skis inside the car. We'd probably travel home to resort and back with them inside the car for security at overnight stops. We have a roof box, a Thule, pretty sure it's an Atlantis 200, which is too short for OH's skis Evil or Very Mad And then there's the issue with the box on of overall height for car park barriers, tunnel etc, easier without a box. Will keep thinking it over Confused

sarah, No problem in the Channel Tunnel, just go in with the Coaches, doesn't cost any more than an ordinary car.
Car Parks can be a problem though.

My Espace will take 7 seats, but I went for the 6 Captain's Chairs instead, 99% of the time it's set up as a 4 seater only, with huge legroom and a huge boot.

Spyderman, do we need to amend the tunnel booking or just turn up with the box on? TBH it's the car parks I am more worried about, the overnight stop place on the return has an underground car park, we stayed there before, not sure it will take car + box, and the resort car parks too.

Nice one Cool! We got ours used so didn't have the choice, but they look good. I agree, ours is set up as a 5 or sometimes 4 seater just about all the time and the amount of space is amazing Very Happy

Anyway back to the original idea of a carrier, anyone any experience of the Atera Nova? It says it fits on normal bars and 'aerobars', would the Espace's bars be comparable with aerobars? Anyone know much about different types of roof bars?

I have tried with no luck to get through to the Roofbox Co both phone and email, seems they are still not sorted there.

sarah, I think you'd be fine just turning up at the tunnel.
Ski resorts are used to people parking with roof boxes, it's just the underground ones that are tight.

I bought my Espace used, anyone who buys one new has money to burn. First year depreciation is just scary. Mine is an Initiale spec, so lots of toys, leather & suede, sat-nav, xenons, etc.

Aero bars are the same profile as the Espace rails, BUT they're straight, not arched. Thule make 2 types - standard box section and the Aero which is basically an oval profile.
Ski carriers would probably be made to fit, but they might need packing out at each end, otherwise they'd rock. I'm sure Renault make a specific one for the Espace, but it's probably twice the price at least.

sarah, Just had a look here: http://www.roofbox.co.uk/ski-snowboard-carriers/

The Atera NOVA 6 does an uplifted model. That'd work perfectly.

Spyderman, mine is the Privilege spec so no toys but it was virtually new, less than 5k on the clock and it had the engine we wanted 3.5. Toofy Grin

Anyway, that Atera Nova 6 uplifted must have been the one the OH saw as he was pretty convinced it would work, only prob is it appears that Roofbox are out of stock, and it's impossible to get any response from them still. I might try PMing the guy from there who posted on here the other week.

Roofbox site does have a section for vehicle specific ski carriers but then no cars drop down from the supposed drop down menu Puzzled

Haven't tried Renault for their own one, that will be a last resort rolling eyes

Spyderman, found out that the Atera won't fit Sad apparently the 'aerobar' adapters are in fact t-track adapters and Roofbox Co can't suggest any other solution for the Espace.

There is a US Thule product which looks like it would do but is only available in the states, it's here but we are a bit concerned about security, it seems like although the carrier is locking, the adapters could just be unscrewed and the whole thing lifted off.

Renault produce a set of adapters too for £35, this would then allow any standard carrier to be used but again the adapters might not be secure. If the carrier sat over the screwheads then maybe but otherwise I can't see it.

The french store Norauto which I think is like their version of Halfords also seems to do this type of product here.

Doesn't seem to be a very straightforward solution. OH is now considering a long slim box and working out if we can travel with it inside the car Shocked and put it on in resort for to-ing and fro-ing. He won't travel with it on the outside because he is stressing about the Telepeage and any other barrier we might have to contend with, I have tried to reassure him about this but he's not having it rolling eyes

Are you trying to get ski racks on oversized aero bars?

Have a look at Rhino Racks - they do adapters that go round them

http://www.rhinorack.co.uk/AccSubCategory_Ski---Snowboard-Carrier-Fitting-Kits_18.aspx

Also, Rola Rack, if you can get them in the UK do ski carriers that mount on that kind of bar.

Yes that's it, the car has its own bars which don't seem to be compatible with any of the standard makes of ski racks.

Thanks very much for the suggestions, the Rhino Rack adaptors looks like they would work well but then only for their own racks which are a bit pricy and the design is not as good as the Thule extender which we quite like the look of. But then you can't have everything and we really do seem to have not many options for this.

I wouldn't get too hung up on those extender racks - I know a few people that use them, basically a bit pointless, and with more bits to break when it gets cold and dirty.

Thule do an adapter for them too - think it's called a "big mouth" adapter. I've seen them advertised in NZ for about $40 kiwi.

Had similar issues with my wife's car last year. I managed to get all the bits to fit the racks on, and two days later, she reversed out the garage AFTER she had used the remote to close the door Shocked She wrote off the racks and cost me a couple of thousand bucks on getting the garage door straightened out as well.

hang11, Thule do make a product adaptor and Extender combined it's the 91726 but not available in the UK Sad We wanted the extender type rack otherwise we'd need to keep a small step in the car!

Sorry to hear about your wife's mishap Shocked Hope she was ok!

Wouldnt suggest turning up at the tunnel with a standard height booking and expect to get in high space on the same crossing on spec. We were bumped by an hour for doing that pre-Christmas (had refreshed booking page which reverted to standard height and didn't notice) guy at the tunnel told us folks were getting 3 hour waits at peak times for doing the same.

Nick Dawes, thanks for the heads up on that, will amend booking if we end up with roof load on.
