Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Ski Olympic versus Silver Ski

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'd welcome advice on the relative merits of Silver Ski and Ski Olympic. We have used Ski Olympic many times before, and mostly been very happy. We used Silver Ski recently and while we liked most of their package, were a bit disappointed with the food - a bit limited and basic. We are not sure if that was just the chalet we stayed at, or whether it was more typical of Silver Ski. Any other thoughts and comparisons welcome. Puzzled

That's a little odd. I've been with Silver Ski, though not for a while. I don't think I could say that I ever found the food basic or limited.

Was it one of the smaller chalets ?

It was actually one of their larger ones (Le Biol in Corchevel 1650) and from what you say it might be more to do with the staff there - who were otherwise great - than Silver Ski generally

I was given to understand that the staff had a lot of discretion regarding menus. I think I heard of some friends having a bad experience in one of the smaller chalets.

I see that Chalet Roger is now run by a new firm SkiVo2. Flights not included, but they supply lessons and packed lunch. Interesting.

having worked for and spent lots of time on holiday with ski olympic, i must say i have always found them to be particulary good. the only thing i found negative is some of the chalets are getting abit old and could do with a spruce up. but saying that it has been 3 years since i was away with them

thirty06, SkiVo2 aren't a new firm: just a new name for what was Skivolution, and prior to that was The Three Vallees Ski Company - must have been going 20 years or thereabouts.

stevew,

I can only answer the last question - no they only fly from Gatwick these days.

By the way, going back to my original post, we have been with Silver Ski again, this time to their Chalet Elaine in Courchevel 1850. Absolutely no complaints about the food there (or anything else come to that). In fact the food was about the best we have had in 30+ chalet holidays. And we are off with them again on Sunday - just hope there's snow!

SkiVo2 is just the new name for SkiVolution, who were called that for the last 15ish years, before which they were known as the Three Vallees Ski Company. So you can't really call them new firm - more an old establish favourite with a new jacket.

My sister is working for Ski Olympic this year. She has LOT of experience in chalets and boats and done quite a few courses. In their bigger chalets, the cooks are responsible for only the cooking and have someone else to do cleaning etc. I think this attracts better cooks, who want to cook but not do anything else. I have no idea how good a cook she is as she hasn't cooked for me very often, but I presume she is pretty good.

True.

nothing wrong with smaller chalets (later in the season though) but you cant beat a bigger 30+ person one with defined jobs.

the way I see it, as a company you need return business and the quality of the food or people running it will do that for you..... ive met nobody that has said I am going to book so and so company because my bed was made everyday and we didnt die of food poisoning

lets not loose site of the economy in general and cutbacks, the wine quality may suffer(if it can get any worse than paint stripper)

Big Dave, We have done 4 trips with Sliver Ski, the menu is down to the chalet host, in some of their larger chalet they have a dedicated cook, the food we have had has always been good, i would put it mostly in the wholesome home cooked category.

Having called Silver Ski to try and get some info, I think I'll be sticking to Olympic in future. They seemed remarkably disinterested when asked for info on their large chalets that I was looking to book out for a big group next season. If that's their approach when I try and give them money, I don't want to deal with them if I have a problem.

That's a shame. I have just taken a group of 20 to Silver Ski's La Biol Chalet in Courchevel 1650 and they were very good, both on the admin before the holiday and in the delivery. Flights and transfers all seamless; chalet clean and well prepared for us; food great (as it was in another of their chalets a couple of weeks back); lovely quiet location - ski in, drag out (next to Granges drag). Silver Ski were also helpful when one of our party unfortunately broke her leg (a manager coming over to fax documents to insurers etc). Got the chalet for £499 per person on their Early Bird tariff (flights, transfers, ski carrriage, half board, wine, ski hosting) which is some way south of Ski Olympic's prices these days, though Silver Ski don't do group discounts at that price.

They have been posting bargains for £299 in some of their chalets recently,

stevew, Shame about the gatwick only flights now, but Bon Coin was well placed for the piste but rubbish for apres ski, its a bus or a walk to nearest bar down the road, you can ski to the door though !! but 50 metre walk back to piste. Better loacted one at soleil in la plagne, but can't remebr the name
if Silverski still did manchester we would use them every year...done meribel and la Tania twice plus la plagne twice

Try LeSki... based in huddersfield and similar to SS but fly out of manchester

Though it wasn't a problem for our mostly geriatric group, Le Biol is also not great for apres ski. It's situated up the mountain and while there is a pretty good bus service linking with 1650, it stops before 7.00pm. So it's a taxi ride (25 euros) back, or a strenuous 30 minute walk up the piste.

Stayed with Silver Ski in Chalet Bouton D'or this January which is in Plagne Centre. Right on the edge of the piste so definitely ski in and ski out. Chalet hosts were fantastic as was the food.
The Gatwick only flight can be a pain, but the upside is that with an 06:00 flight in low season you should be in resort by midday so if keen can get an extra half days skiing in.
