The radical alternative to conventional ski racing - head-to-head 'ski cross' and 'snowboard cross' - has its own clothing aesthetic based on regular recreational skiwear. It's considered a cultural convention of the event. But the raised profile and increasingly lucrative fight for victories is inducing some racers to wear tighter more aerodynamic clothing. Feathers are starting to fly.

When peer pressure and mocking do not work, the fashion police monitoring ski cross and snowboard cross at the Winter X Games can resort to more hands-on measures: pinching the fabric on an athlete’s pants between boot and midthigh should produce at least eight centimeters of play — roughly the length of a credit card. If not, well, the rules are not fixed. |
How would you like your thighs pinched at the start of a ski race?

P.S. Other news from the world of ski-cross: Daron Rahlves, veteran racer on the World Cup circuit, has switched to ski cross for his fourth Olympics.

The same happened in downhill mountain biking. The people that didn't fancy looking like ladies' front bottoms wearing skinsuits started to get a bit grumpy about people beating them in skinsuits. Skinsuits were banned and it's all evened up and now people don't look like idiots. Everyone's a winner. People also started taking peaks off their helmets but that disappeared by itself.

Lizzard, not really. If snow sports are trying to connect with der Yoof, or even old gits like me, having them wear things that are not sprayed on lycra does keep alive the idea that we are all engaged in roughly the same activity.
A bit like how touring car/rally cars are easier to relate to than F1 - even if the only bit that is actually from the same parts bin as your own car is the badge on the boot.

Having been a pro mountainbiker in my past I can see a distinct distancing of the sport from a potential bike buying customer, lycra is not a good look ever! Give me some casuals & I'm more than happy.

Not really - you've written six words, and I wouldn't be ashamed of most of them.
