The radical alternative to conventional ski racing - head-to-head 'ski cross' and 'snowboard cross' - has its own clothing aesthetic based on regular recreational skiwear. It's considered a cultural convention of the event. But the raised profile and increasingly lucrative fight for victories is inducing some racers to wear tighter more aerodynamic clothing. Feathers are starting to fly.

The same happened in downhill mountain biking. The people that didn't fancy looking like ladies' front bottoms wearing skinsuits started to get a bit grumpy about people beating them in skinsuits. Skinsuits were banned and it's all evened up and now people don't look like idiots. Everyone's a winner. People also started taking peaks off their helmets but that disappeared by itself.

Lizzard, not really. If snow sports are trying to connect with der Yoof, or even old gits like me, having them wear things that are not sprayed on lycra does keep alive the idea that we are all engaged in roughly the same activity.
A bit like how touring car/rally cars are easier to relate to than F1 - even if the only bit that is actually from the same parts bin as your own car is the badge on the boot.

Having been a pro mountainbiker in my past I can see a distinct distancing of the sport from a potential bike buying customer, lycra is not a good look ever! Give me some casuals & I'm more than happy.
