Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

British soldiers ski the Arctic, preparing for Afghanistan - stunning photos

The Royal Marines have deployed hundreds of soldiers to the Norwegian Arctic Circle on ten weeks of intensive ski training, in preparation for duties and combat in Afghanistan.

This report and photos from Mail Online.

Quote:
Soldiers with 3 Commando Brigade are training in northern Norway where they are being taught extreme cold weather survival skills in up to six feet of snow ... Commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Oliver Lee described it as 'the toughest soldiering there is' ...
Some are veterans who are simply refreshing their skills, but for many it is their first time in Norway and their first experience on skis.

The temperature in Innset dropped to -20c last week, with the added windchill taking it down even further to a low of -28c.

So 5 or 6 degrees warmer than Hemsedal when my kids were skiing outside. Mind you my kids had a warm apartment to sleep in and had to be encouraged to carry their own skis instead of having a tent and a heavy pack. Maybe next time wink

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

''Cpl O'Connor, 36, who has spent 15 years with the unit, said: 'My first couple of winters he was here and he saw me do my first ice-breaking drill, which is when you cut a big hole in the ice and ski into it.''

That does not sound very clever. Blow that for a game of soldiers. When they advertise skiing in the recruitment literature this is not what you expect.

Great post. Thanks.

Could have gone to the Beacons in these cash strapped times Wink

And you'd think that they would have some post 1970 gear. Poor Fitzwilliams.

This is the british army we're talking about - hardly surprised they look like they were kitted out from the ski equivalent of the PE-kit-skank-box.
