Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

L2A or A'dH?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Looking to go away around 25.3.09 for 1 week, to either Les Deux Alps or Alpe d'Huez... Is there a resort that would be preferable at this time of year. I've been told that A d'H has south facing slopes and will be like porridge around this time of year lower down. Looking to book flights to either Grenoble,Chambrey or Geneva and then drive to resort. Any recommendations or ideas for other resorts for this time of year for my trip?

I'd run the risk of AdH, you're right about around town and some of the lower slopes but I've ended a season there in knee-deep snow on the pistes. Like any ski resort it's a lottery but that's where my money would go.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

25/3 isn't that late for either resort.
as to which is better, i prefer ADH, others prefer L2A - depends what you are into

I also prefer ADH and found L2A (or une alpe et demie!!) a bit of a pain. Skiing is nice on top at L2A but I found ADH had more variety, and is particularly good for beginners and second year progressives.

Having been to Alpe d'Huez today, I'd recommend 2Alpes. Much better maintained pistes, and we're not in the habit of leaving bloody great rocks sticking out of the middle of them for no real reason. Evil or Very Mad

Significantly cheaper as well.

Arno, at over 40€ for a day pass, I wouldn't expect to find them in the middle of the piste when there's ample snow lying about to bury them in. If I want rocks I can go and find them off piste.

Arno,
You never get rocks in Austria just gentle organically grazed grass so you can ski with a hint of frost. wink

I like both! Been to ADH that time of year twice, no problem but I know it can get slushy. As Lizzard said I think it is more expensive there than L2A. I always go to L2A at easter and it's always good except perhaps for lower slopes. For either choose Grenoble and with a 6 day pass at either you can have one day at the other as well.

barthez1980, I think it depends on what sort of skiing you're looking for. If you want lots of easily accessible lift served black off piste then here will be better. If you want lots of cruising then probably ADH. However it clearly is significantly cheaper here and you can ski at least one day in ADH (regular buses go Weds & Thurs for €8.50 return pp). If you have a car you can easily get to Serre Chevalier as well + you will be able to ski La Grave over the top by then.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Considering the timing of end of March (i'm guessing you meant 2010?). L2A tends to hold it's snow better... Ad'H gets more sun. I should disclose I have a bias toward L2A as I'm local-ish.
