Hi,
I was in Sauze last year, fantastic place for nightlife, you have many bars to choose from. There is an irish bar just 2 mins walk from the bottom of the resort run, this has a good easy going vibe about it and is great to have a couple of drinks after a days Skiing/boarding. There is a central point half way up the slopes which has a few restaurants.(think it is called sporting or sportif not to sure) It gets very busy here around lunch time so would plan to eat just before 12 or after 1pm. It can be pricey as well. Always good to take stuff with as there are many picnic benches around.
I have some friends going in 2 weeks so can let you know how the snow is at that point.
If someone has been more recently they could tell you more, but hopefully that is a little help.

 souts1, The place I think you mean is Sportinia! The resort is good fun!
FiFi_Trixibell, Have been many times, On a couple of occaisions with Crystal and been "guided" by them! Being guided by Mr. or Miss Gap year is OK but dont expect too much. They will show you around the resort all right and that is about it. They may not take you over to Sansicario or Sestriere, but do it by yourself.
There is a good restaurant next to the Irish pub, down a dingy lit staircase and the place is dark but the food is good, plentiful and very good value! On the other end of the scale is the Restaurant Falcon, run by a guy from Liverpool. Now the assistant mayor of Sauze. Good food but more like French prices!
Sauze is a nice spot, and you will have a blast. How many times have you and the BF been skiing? I may be able to give you a couple of itinaries!

Thanks for replies - all opinions and tips greatly appreciated! I love finding out more about my holiday before I go; all builds the excitement I think figuring out where you wanna ski, whats good, about the hotel etc!
souts1: that would be useful if your mates could give a bit of feedback on the snow. We've still got a good 5 weeks before we go but it's nice to know what the snow is like and also how the runs tend to hold up over the course of a day across different areas.
Roy: Nice to hear you have been back to Sauze numerous times; usually a good sign! We have heard a lot of good things and hoping it will be good fun. I'm relatively new to regular skiing as only been a few times but my BF is far more experienced than me and has done the lot. Last holiday I had a morning's worth of private tuition which was brilliant and the rest of the holiday we were fine by ourselves. BF would pop on and off piste and we'd make our way down the mountain. This is really why I though an escort service might be handy as neither of us have been to the milky way before and it looks a pretty blimmin big area, but interesting you say about it being gap year people which now i think about it completely makes sense.
Ability wise I would class myself as a lower intermediate - I'm capable of the skiing but my confidence lets me down as I've simply not had the time on the slopes and the bulgarian runs last time were relatively narrow compared to when I've been to france. I can quite happily get down reds now and managed a big wide powdery black at the end of our last holiday so I'm looking forward to working on perfecting my parallells and building confidence. Itineraries would interesting to see if you have some. We are looking at piste map at moment and working out what might be good to do. Heard sestriere is nice to do on a day.
Advice on bars eateries etc is fab. Generally I find I'm too shattered to do any major drinking but a decent few glasses or wine or a spirit or two relaxes the muscles!

I was a rep out there a good few years ago. As it is a party town, the tip is to ski until 4-ish, a couple of beers BUT GET TO BED BY 5pm for a few hours sleep. up at 7-8pm, shower, dinner then party til 3am. Bed for 4 hours, up and do it all again. You can easily do this all week. Aaaaah memories.
Osteria vagabondi is probably the best bar. It is in the the main square by the little supermarket (di per di?). Although it depends what scene you like.

Sorry FiFi_Trixibell, one years skiing and a lesson may not be quick enough for the guiding! The reps will make that judgment of course but they have to think about the other "billys" with you. You must be able to keep up with the group comfortably, as the others will not want to hang around waiting in the mode of ESF lessons.
Not meant to put you off, but your BF should know what I mean if he has done this before. We had fun there so no doubt you will have a plast!

i think your right about the skiing, myself and daughter are going to Montgenevre about 8 miles from Sauze, we are planning just to explore together, as we are not too abitious, we have both had 2 weeks lessons and feel we have reaached our peak (mine was 25 years ago mind) we would not want to slow a rep lead party down, as we love long blues, take our time on reds, and avoid blacks

FiFi_Trixibell, Got an e mail from my Brother in Law who went out on Saturday. They finished early today as it started snowing heavily and snow conditions are good. Not been myself but he tells me the resort is good for cruising, lots of wide blues and reds and relatively easy blacks. Lifts a bit old and slow and its hilly to walk around. Lots of Brits and Irish there and good fun in the bars.

ok i'm not the skier who visited loads of resorts, but Sauze seems to be one that is perched on hill side, rather than in a valley, hence its an effort getting about on foot! and if your at the lower end getting to the first lift can be hard work with the ski boots on!

Corky, that may not be too bad the main hub if Sauze is at the bottom of the main slope which village wise is at the top of the hill.
when i went we stayed in hotel on the square, and our only advantage was we were first on the ski bus (which in 1985 was a mercedes minibus) but staggering back down at 2 in morning was always fun

vivski, where abouts are you flying from?
The miravelle hotel is supposedly 2 mins from the old town which should be good I hope. Apart from the obvious whats the difference between the old town and the new town (or whatever the rest is?) - is one area better/more lively/quieter/more bars/trashy/pretty etc? Don't know if we're going to be at the top or bottom of a hill but know were a bit of a walk away from the slopes.
I'm looking forward to the fact that we'll have free wine in the evenings though - always a good way to start the night off!!!

I went to Sauze in Jan 09, from what I remember:
In Sportina you're looking at around 10-12 euros for a slice of pizza and a drink,
The little pizza takeout thing already mentioned is quite handy, it was around 3 euros for a large slice IIRC.
The Sportina chairlift is about a ten minute walk from the centre, mostly uphill. Take care on the steps leading to the lift, if they're icy its hard work, especially carrying ski's.
You can get to the Sportina area from the chairlift in the centre of the village if you take the next lift on and ski back down. Most people taking lessons use the Sportina lift to get there in the morning so the village lift may be quieter.
If you're at the bottom of the village, it is an absolute mission to the lifts. Our ski hire shop let us keep boots and ski's literally across the road from the village run so this wasn't so bad for us.
I was a beginner then and skied every run apart from the Black leading to Sportina comfortably, for this reason I'd suggest heading over to Sestrierre, didn't get much time there but it looked much more varied than Sauze.
Unless you like cross country skiing, do not do the Blue leading from Sportina back to the village. It's more uphill than down. I thought it would be a good idea on my second day, ended up cutting onto a steep & icy red which was a heap more enjoyable.
Eating out in the village is varied, theres restaurants that are cheap and also super expensive ones. They generally started to get busy at around 9-9.30ish.

yes when we were there the snow as bad and no ski back to resort for novices, we had to go up sportina chairlift every morning
from what i remember the pistes weren't well marked with just the odd blue pole ever so often
unlike the one in france where you get a number pole every 100 metres

Just got back last sunday and the conditions are great. There was a big group of us all different levels, so the beginners joined ski school at sportinia and left their skis and boots up there in ski lockers (free when booking skis and boots from skiinitaly.com) the rest of us are good off piste and piste skiers so we always skied back down to resort. Lunch time self serice at sportinia capana king good value for money. Paddies and Mira funky bar great fun, live music at vagabondi on our late nights out. Ski bus this year is free so just hop onto the bus to get to sportinia. If you want to save lots of money book your skis, pass etc locally through christine, just send her an email christine @ skiinitaly.com. Got some great k2 extreme twin tips for a fantastic price with free ski locker or helmet hire and also saved 5€ on lift pass ,22€ on ski school.
snow reports seem to say it should snow all this week and dump it on friday.....so enjoy

Woop for free bus, hadn't realised it was free this year - was expecting to have to pay for it and then wasn't going to pay for locker! All sounds good though on the whole. Last day at work tomorrow is going to be unbearable! Snow looking fantastic and set to keep on falling. Now just want some nice blue sky days and couldn't be better!

FAQ
, Second week of March St. Anton and PdS either for Easter or another week in April. So I am lucky this year. Unfortunately wont get a summer break as this is our busyiest time!
...... but at least that way I can take 3 pairs of skis
