Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Les Deux Alpes LDA L2A - What's the ski area like?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

Booked a 3 day cheeky one with my brovver 22nd Jan.

Both keen at pushing the limits. Interested as to whether LDA is going to challenge us.

Advice to where to head in LDA? ....... on reflection should we have booked Alp D'Huez?

Thanks for your comments, feeling much better. I guess it's difficult to out ski any area in 3 days anyway!

RetroBod, If you are good enough to ski all unpisted slopes then there is an almost infinite number of black/black lines around the mountain. The second biggest off piste area in France according to French ex-champion snowboard freerider. For people who just 'tick off' slopes then clearly 220Kms of piste does not compete with 650. I've been here 18 years and still haven't skied everything. rolling eyes

t-humphreys, Booked all separate because I only had a limited pass-out from Mrs Retrobod!

So Gatwick to Grenoble - EasyJet
Accom - La Muzelle - direct with Pierre Vacance
Resort transfer - probably use ben-bus

4 nights - 3 full days ski & maybe 1/2 day on Friday cost £480 all in(lift pass / flight / trans / ski hire etc). Food / Beer extra!!

First time done it this way normally ski by the week and go package so testing the water somewhat!

easiski, So pleased you replied as I gathered from previous posts you are the Guru de LDA!

I scared myself by looking at a rather poor and small scaled piste map. Having been on the official site and downloaded the piste map there looks plenty for our trip.

Both of us good skiers. Silly question but how "safe" is off piste? Got scared last year by holes in Flaine and constant reports on avalanche dangers. Is much of the off piste non-pisted terrain or are we talking totally way out off piste?

We loved the wall in Avoriaz .....so much we had to go straight back and do it again wobbly legs and all!

How are the snow levels now(saw your pics of recent snow BTW)!

RetroBod, if you want to save money, you can get a taxi from Grenoble airport to Grenoble bus station (about 20 euros), from there I paid about 9 euros for 2 tickets on a coach to ADH! I presume the price will be around the same for L2A

RetroBod, Skola, Regular buses from the airport to the bus station and then change, very cheap way to transfer, but ti depends on how well the timings work of course. From Grenoble they are all regular buses and so go at time suitable for locals and not necessarily for tourists.

RetroBod, A great deal of the skiable off piste is lift served - ie: almost all of the Fee area (there are only two pistes there), but which wall is good or dangerous will depend on the snow and wind etc. All of the face is skiable without significant avalanche danger normally (about 5,000 lines available there), and Rachas/Grand Couloir area again depends. Rachas can be dodgy but is usually controlled. The Echines on the glacier is good viz is also excellent if there hasn't been too much wind around. However bigger trips like Les Travers, St Christophe (whichever route) and Cuculet should only be attempted with a guide as they can be definitely dangerous at the wrong times. Chalance is lift served but care should be taken and a guide is best.

Make sure you have all your avvi gear (tranni, shovel etc) and best to wear a helmet. LG is closed today - don't go there without a guide. I hope this helps.

Very Happy

RetroBod, the bus is a good cheap option to travel from airport to resort if you are traveling at the weekend but I think you will find that week days only one bus runs per day so it is unlikely this will be of use. You can check it out at http://www.altibus.com/index.aspx .
