Hello all, I have decided to invest in some skis, but I am having trouble deciding what to test.
I have up to £400 odd to spend, am 6ft, and 15 st. Spend most of my time on reds and am starting to explore blacks more. I have also started to discover off piste - last year it was along side red pistes and this year the plan is to get a guide and try proper off piste.
So, knowing all that, does anyone have any ideas, because I am getting very confused by all the choice!

Because of where you're heading in the future and your size I'd suggest going for a reasonable mid-fat with a waist of 80-95. As I understand it, your piste skills are not yet that strong so I wouldn't want to go over 95mm, but you certainly (should) have the weight/strength to rip the piste up with a good mid-fat which of course will also help you out off-piste and in powder. I would look at a length of around 180-185. (Opinions will vary!  )
At a heavier weight I'm a firm believer that you need to go for a stronger, higher quality ski which is good and damp (hard) and unfortunately at your price range your options for 2009-10 skis will be limited unless you want something low-end and "buttery" (not good at 15 stone!). So, find a ski you think sounds good for you and then see if you can get for example the 2007/2008 version which is still of course plenty good - and less likely to be nicked as much as anything else! Keep an eye on German/Austrian websites for good deals on skis/bindings - e.g., last winter I got the 2008/2009 iM82 for 500 euros incl. bindings from Austria - cracking deal!

All three of them fail to hit the mark of my suggestions... All are cheap and cheerful piste skis!

kosciosco, I skied Scott Crusades in Tignes last month. Great ski and would fit the bill.

Thanks, I think I will test the Head Peak 73 (76 if they have it) and the Fischer Watea 84's up at EB in Milton Keynes. These both seem to be interesting looking skis

i'm in a similiar position to you, however i adopted a slightly different approach to buying skis.
got drunk and ended up on ebay and bought 3 pairs.. now ended up with only one pair ofter getting rid of the others.
so my advice is do it sober

I would say go fatter with the Peaks, 76 is still piski and not midfat. Defo go over 80mm. Sultan 85 (Dynastar) is pretty damn stiff so would suit your weight, good float in the pow, and fairly aggressive sidecut works well for medium radius carves on piste. Only really fails in super deep pow and bulletproof ice.

On your suggestion that the Peak 76 is still not fat enough I came across the Monster 82 which I think is an 08/09 ski and this looks a pretty good deal:
