Just started looking for Easter and St Anton is coming up with reasonably priced chalets, is it ridiculously expensive there? Cant afford to get there then wish we hadn't!! I know its a lively place, but nice lively or full of horrid drunks, and rowdy crowds? anyone been recently that can offer advice, we're 2 families all over 16yrs except one 10 yr old! all intermediates, thank you!

The area splits into 2 - the town end and the Nasserein end. The big two apres bars are up the home piste a little way at the town end (meaning that lots of people ski down a short way in the dark after a few beers). The Mooserwirt is, arguably, the biggest and best apres ski bar in the world (apparently selling more Carlsberg lager than any other outlet) and is very germanic - playing loud rock and umpah type music all overseen by DJ Gerhart - an aged DJ who sings along with the odd track or two. It has a duel level bar area with the biggest light system you have ever seen hanging from the roof. The downstairs area becomes packed after about 4.00 and the sight of the waiters carrying two dozen half litres of beer (presumably Carlsberg?) on a tray above their heads through a cheek to cheek packed throng of revellers really does have to be seen to be believed! The other "big name" bar on the piste is the Krazy Kanguruh which plays more mainstream pop music but is divided into two smaller drinking areas. It is definitely more drink orientated.
There are 2 other apres bars on the slope that are both a little quieter and both have live bands 2 or 3 times a week.
In town there are a few bars that offer apres ski that is decidedly quieter than either the Mooserwirt or the KK. The Anton Bar at the bottom of the main piste is one of my favourites but Scotty's and Picadilly in the centre of town also have "happy hour" offers on drinks.
The Pomodoro pizza house is the best place to eat on your chalet staff day off. Huge long tables shared with whoever is around and the best pizzas this side of Italy.
Evening entertainment (ie: post 8.00 when Mooserwirt and KK shut) is in town in a dozen bars all of which offer something different. There is something for everyone and certainly not all of them are full of screaming drunks (although it has to be said - given the amount of drinking in the Moose and KK there are some!).
As loubylou says, I've never noticed that the prices were any more outrageous than any other ski resort.
Nasserein is a considerable way out of the town centre. It is a good 15/20 minute walk with few bars along the way so if you are staying there then you will undoubtedly spend more money on taxi rides home. There is an apres bar at the bottom of the main nasserein lift but it is nothing like as lively as the main piste apres bars.
Overall St A is a fantastic resort. Great skiing, great apres, great evenings out. That is why it is so popular and, unfortunately, that is, presumably, why it is likely to be a bit more expensive. A case of simple supply/demand economics.
But IMHO worth every penny.
