Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

reviews Kitzbuhel Austria Feb 10

Me and four snowboading friends are thinking of having a very last minute trip too kitz this feb. the weather conditions are said to be great with all lifts open in the area. Most of the reviews stat its an expensive place to drink and dine out but has a great apres ski and nightlife. This will be our first time in austria, been boading in most places, but over recent years found with increasing beer prices espseially France/Norway has affected the night life dramaticlly. Im asking for any honest opinons of the place/area. We dont want be sat in some random empty bars forced to pay €10 a pint just to get out of our rooms at night. ive heard some of the horror stories about Austria but nerver been or know anyone whos been. we would like to go somewhere we neverbeen before.

Many thanks for reviews

jabbathegut, I found Kitzbuhel fairly cheap. I went in March 2008. Admittedly the exchange rate was a bit better then. The Londoner is probably the most expensive bar and full of Brits and dodgy pub bands. Personally I preferred Das Lichtl, Bergsinn, Streifalm and Highways for late night dancing. I only ate out one night as I was staying in a catered chalet, but that worked out at €30 per head including wine. I don't think Kitzbuhel is in the same price league as St Anton or Ischgl.

Kitz is good fun with some great skiing on and off piste. It can be very expensive, it is very much one of Austria's "society" resorts, but you don't need to eat in 5 star restaurants and outside of the race it is much quieter. The snow can get a bit thin on the lower runs if the temperatures warm up, though it should be fine for the moment. The Londoner is the classic boozy apres venue. Maybe a bit too boozy at times... But that is a matter of taste. I've also had great evenings out at Streifalm, the Pavilion and Chizzos. I wouldn't say it has either the best or the cheapest apres in Austria, but it is good fun. Not quite sure what the horror stories (?) you refer to are, but I'd hope Kitzbuhel wouldn't be one of them.

jabbathegut, In short, its a lovely town, good apres ski and reasonably priced compared to the big French resorts and Austrian resorts such as Lech, Ischgl and St. Anton but the skiing isn't particularly challenging and it doesn't have a great snow record as its fairly low.

jabbathegut, went there for a mates stag weekend a couple of years ago, ticked all the boxes, but agree with the comment that the runs are relatively easy apart from the downhill course which was just sheet ice

1st night got into resort about 1am, managed to find places to play til around 6am, strolled home stopping at the bakery for the 1st round of the morning croissants. on the slopes by 10:30am. Back in the pub come 16:30 for 6 nations, played again till 2-4am depending on individuals. Sunday one of the 'top 5 days ever' boarding in sunshine and freshies. Left at 5pm drove back to munich, home by silly o'clock..Died in the office on monday...

No issue with finding places, but definitely different bars rock at different times, so ask a local if the bar you've walked into is quiet.

Londoner is a good starting/meeting place with jaeger bombs but move on pretty quickly IMHO.

We've been to Kitzbuhel a few times, normally as our 'cheap' holiday! There's lots of cheap B&Bs and you can eat out very cheaply if you wish. It's a great place to stay. O'Flannigans is an Irish pub that's quite busy, also shows all the football matches etc if you're into that. I would recommend you buy the Kitzbuheler Alpen Allstar lift pass http://www.allstarcard.at/en/default.asp . It's not much more than the normal Kitzbuhel lift pass, but you can ski over to Westerndorf (with a short bus ride) and then the whole Ski Welt is open to you. Just adds to the variety.

If you're used to skiing in France, you'll find the prices generally to be cheaper in Austria.

Oh - and welcome tro snowHeads! snowHead

jabbathegut, you may struggle to find accomodation as Fasching begins around then as well as lots of other school holiday breaks.

We passed by on sat night and boarded on sunday from kirchberg.
Now what I am going to say is based on a day with lotsa shadow and clouds up till 1950 meters (so most tops were just above the white sea, below everything was white).

I did not really enjoy the day, almost all pistes have pretty flat to even uphill pathways in them even if it looks like there would have been an other alternative.
Some blues are pretty steep and the blacks I seen are more like a steeper red.
The crowd is utterly inexperienced so you are slaloming all the way on the pathways and this was on a non crowded day seeing there were no queues whatsoever at any lift. We covered about 65km of pistes and lifts and walking...... We arrived from kirchberg up to lift f6 and the 62 piste was the best one that we did all day.

The slopes were very well prepared, very hard, however since there was a lack of snow, grass and stones could be seen on almost all pistes. This of course did not help to keep the edges sharp to control the board on hard slopes Wink

All in all we loved the farm we slept in for €16 per person per night inc fruhstuck(at entry did scare us for the cow smell but in the room not noticable) Lovely grandma hostess. After 8 hours of boarding on the kronplatz and a 4,5 hour drive(more snow on those roads then on the pistes) from there we did not feel like checking the nightlife on saturday night.

But please don't bring your board unless a really big snow dump had taken place so you can go of-piste. Take your skis and wait for some snow to fall there. We drove there when it was snowing everywhere but there and left when it was snowing everywhere but there.

I'm going on 24th. It is 1 of my top 3 resorts. It may not be so good for boarders as there are a few traverses, I'm a skier so I don't really know what to look for in that department. Good early apres in Stampl. The Casino can be fun if not too full if Mafskis. I'm not really a nightclub type so I can't comment on that side of things. The skiing is very good with plenty of variety and good modern lifts with hands-free liftpass. There is a lap-dancing bar if that's your thing and you can go 10-pin bowling in Going. I think the Aquarena wellness centre is free on the liftpass. I hope you enjoy it, it's unlike most French resorts as it's a real town with normal business/commerce taking place which gives it a slightly different atmosphere to a purpose-built resort.

Only a small minority of French resorts are purpose-built, you know. wink

Few are as glam as Kitzbuhel, though Megeve might run it close. My sister swears she saw women with Gucci moonboots in Kitzbuhel.
