Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Two more podiums for GB in age group races

Some of the nordic squad have been racing over the New Year period and have produced more good results with one win and one second in their age groups.

Fi Hughes took second in the junior 5km classic race and pushed her FIS points down low enough for a World Cup start. I'm not sure how long it is since we had any competitors in the womens side of the World Cup.

Callum Smith won the under 18s race and was 9th overall in the juniors 10km classic. He also got his best FIS points score just 0.26 outside the BOA olympic qualification standard.

Dave - how are the juniors funded ? Is it up to the parents to get sponsorship or is there some sort of central funding (which sounds unlikely given the current funsing issue for Snow Sports in the UK) ?

There are some details for each of the senior athletes on their biographies on the website. Most are self funded/parent funded, especially the younger athletes. Some get Tass money, sports council money, IOC/BOA money, some get equipment sponsorship. Some have sponsorship from oacal companies. Varies from athlete to athlete. Some work all hours when they're not training or at school/uni.
.
If you look at the biographies in the drop down menus on the home page under 'squad' and then 'world group' each athlete has given some info on their individual funding situation. There is also some genearl info here: http://www.bnds.org.uk/index.php?/General/funding.html

Rick or Frank would love to hear from anyone interested in sponsoring the squad Smile

More podiums for the Brits over the weekend just gone:

Quote:
With the big freeze in UK and northern Europe grabbing recent headlines it may be hard to believe that the British Nordic Ski Team had difficulty finding sufficient snow to fulfill their racing schedule last weekend. The planned Continental Cup meeting in Zweisel, Eastern Germany, was cancelled when the organizers found they had too little snow and an alternative venue was arranged at Oberwiesnthal on the Northern German/Czech border. The 5 strong British Nordic Ski Team, traveling from Switzerland, were joined at the race site by Nordic ski teams from 22 other nations. Their arrival coincided with Germany’s biggest storm of the season.

Despite the blizzards and freezing temperatures the GB team was not deterred. Their results proved the trip very worthwhile with Andrew Young (17, Huntly) and Callum Smith (17, Inverurie) claiming 6th and 16th place respectively in the Junior (U20) Men’s 10km classic race on Sunday. These places gave them 1st and 3rd in their U18 age group. Andrew Young also had a pleasant surprise when he was called to the podium to receive a prize for his 6th place. A British Nordic Skier on a European Cup podium is a rare sight, and he attracted much attention from other nation’s ski teams!

A very good result for Andrew Young and especially Callum Smith, not so good for Muzzy, but he's missed a lot of training in recent weeks due to very low temperatures in Norway. All three achieved the GB Fis points qually standard for the olympics .

I'll update with a link to the news piece on the bnds website once its up.

The news article is now up:

Better than I thought from the FIS results as Andrew and Callum came 1st and 2nd in the under 18 age group (as well as 5th and 6th in the juniors).

Also Callum has now pushed into the group meeting the GB qualification standard for the olympics. Though someone is going to be dissapointed as (afaik) we have 3 places and now 4 potential athletes for those places.

More good results in the pursuit race on Saturday. Andrew Young winning the under 18 race and coming 4th in the juniors, just knocked off the podium in the sprint for the finish.

Quote:
In the second day of Cross-country ski racing at Marbach, Switzerland, Andrew Young (17, Huntly) of the British Nordic Ski Team has added another Swiss championship to his list of wins. In the 15k Junior Pursuit race on Saturday he took the U18 title and came 4th in the Junior (U20) race.

Other Junior team members also had good races, with Callum Smith (17, Inverurie) going particularly well considering that another skier stood on and broke his pole while climbing in the first race circuit. Despite falling from the front of the field to near the back while he obtained a replacement pole, Callum regained a lot of ground in the second half, to finish 12th. Just ahead of Callum, Andrew Musgrave (19, Oyne) recovered from a disappointing classic half with some fine skating to claim 10th place. Alex Standen (19, Huntly), continuing his return to racing after illness, finished in a respectable 24th place.

In the Women’s 10km Pursuit, Sarah Young (20, Huntly) had her best race since an ankle injury, coming in a good 11th. Fiona Hughes (19, Huddersfield) struggled in the skate section after having recorded the best junior classic leg. She finished 15th overall, and 5th Junior.

Next up is the world juniors at the end of the month. The team will be aiming to improve on the best of a 9th and 12th achieved last year.
