Poster: A snowHead

A mate of mine went on an organised 'winter activity' holiday last year and would like to do some more x-country skiing and snow-shoeing (he didn't like the dog-sledding!) but would like to do it on a DIY basis as the organised trips are crazy expensive.
Is a DIY trip feasible?, eg can you hire the gear in the same way as you hire 'normal' ski gear? Do you normally need a lift pass and are there cheaper, restricted passes for x-country / snow-show types?
Any suggestions for resorts suitable for a DIY x-country & snow-shoe holiday with sensible travel arrangements, hotels & prices? One 'resort' used by a couple of the major TO's for this type of holiday is Dobbiaca but how would you get there on a DIY basis - it's in the middle of nowhere! It looks like you could fly to Innsbruck or Verona (?) but can you get to resort by public transport? Anyone done it?
Any help appreciated
Thanks v much

You probably need a trail pass. Though it's usually a fraction of the cost of a alpine lift pass (since you typically don't need to ride the lift!)

Yes. Though most alpine hire shops may not carry much (or any) stocks on x-c gear. So your mate might need to find x-c specific shops. On resorts that has extensive x-c skiing trails, there bound to be x-c specific shops to hire gears. Many would do lessons too.
As for x-c specific resorts, there's a recent thread on that:

have you thought of going to northern Finland, lots of snowshoeing and cross country skiing there, I highly recommend Saariselka or Yllas as the cross country ski paths are excellent and extensive, and more importantly free
you can get some great last min deals on last min dot com for about £200 each with flights and hotel/cabin, most of them are with inghams who you can also book cross country ski lessons with and/or high skis from them, I am sure they give them for free in some situations from what I recal

I've been to Venabu in Norway a couple of times, stayed at the Venabu Fjellhotel. Flight into Oslo, train to Ringebu & the hotel will pick you up from the station. IIRC abut 600km of trails & amazing scenery, there was no charge for using the trails either.

as per POE, levi and ylas are fab . My wife and i went to levi a few years back . She did x-country and loved it . From memory i think there is about 400km of trail plus plenty of snow shoeing, skidoooos (that was my favourite), raindeer and husky .
However this was going with crystal ,so package but can`t see why it can`t be arranged independantly.

You'll need to Register first of course.

but why do it diy when there are so many great deals on at the mo, the flights alone cost more than the package deal, once you are there you do not need to be doing any 'group' activities
