Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Vermont conditions?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi

We're thinking of trip to Vermont (Stowe/ Killington) in the next few weeks and were wondering what the conditions were like at the moment? We've been told different things about skiing there at this time of year so thought we'd ask the experts!

Thanks

If you're going to go to the effort of crossing the atlantic why go to vermont when you could fly for another 2 hours to the west coast?

The eastcoast US resorts had one of their worst Novembers on record (warm and dry), but December has improved considerably after a few biggish snowfalls.

Killington, the largest station, has about 45% of its lifts open currently. It is open top to bottom.

It will be cold on the eastcoast in January. Wait until March or April when it warms up a bit. Much more pleasant.

The eastcoast is fine. Do a twostopper. A few days in Killy, a few days in Sunday River.

I'm currently in Vermont. Conditions were good today, as it snowed most of the day. It warmed up a bit, but pistes were good. Most places in VT are currently about 50% open. Most places should be running 100% in the first or second week of Jan. Temps will be dropping over the next few days & snow is expected. This time of year in VT is very cold. But it's usually pretty good for snow beginning especially this week & through Feb

We'd love to go to Colorado but we'e a bit tight on time and think the East coast is a bit easier on jet lag! We would go to Europe but the Pound to the Euro make things a bit on the expensive side as we discovered last year!!

Was thinking about Stowe and we'd be arriving between 16 & 23 Jan so hopefully the conditions would be OK then.

Thanks for the info guys!

Snow there should be fine then. Keep in mind that the weekend of Jan 16 is a holiday weekend over here, so the moutain will be very busy on that Sat, Sun, Mon. Expect long queues on those days. But from the 19th on you should have fine conditions & it'll be quieter. They're getting snow at the minute in Vermont as well & more expected for the upcoming weekend.

Thanks for that info, I hadn't realised about the holiday weekend.

We do have the option of coming for the last 2 weeks in March too, would it be better then or would the snow be poorer? We're not to worried about it being warmer.

Thanks
Very Happy

The last 2 weeks of March should be fine snow-wise. It definitely tends to be warmer then, and that means there's always possibilities of rain. For Vermont the only real guaranteed good snow conditions are mid Jan - mid Mar. Even then nothing is guaranteed, but Stowe will almost always be operating at 100% during those times. Late march can get a bit dicey & snow can become slushy if temps warm. It makes things a lot of fun with beautiful weather, but not what I'd consider optimal ski conditions. I think late Jan will be better for snow, although it can be bitter cold. That's kind of the trade off though. You could get lucky with some late march snow, but it's not typical of that time of year. Coming from UK I'd say Jan is a better bet for straight ski conditions. March better for the combination of skiing/drinking/hanging out in sun

Excellent conditions in Vermont over the New Year's holiday. Although yesterday was bitterly cold & windy (many lifts were not running due to wind), Thurs - Sat were incredible. Most areas got between 15-30cm over the past few days. Saturday Jan 1 was especially good around the state. Temperatures around 0c and powder snow in the morning!

Burlington, Vermont, saw its biggest ever snowfall the past few days.

About 70cm in a day or two.
