Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Excellent conditions today in Wigan – Greater Manchester’s Premier Ski Resort. A dump of almost 10cm overnight, on a hard packed base. Conditions were perfect for the inaugural Wigan Ski Tour on my newly aquired flea-bay skis (bought with Yads Moss/Raise in mind, not the town centre).

Nice powder all over the piste/path/road. Shame lack of gradient meant couldn’t make best use of it…


On the flat

Gnarly route through the trees. There’s a tricky 100m of almost green run beyond that flower bed!


On the piste

Conditions and speed on piste improved dramatically once the piste bashers (kids on sledges) started to compact it.

The snow park is not yet open, a bit more snow is needed on those rails yet. However that mountain hut you can see in the distance sells great pies.

I have some concerns about your binding setup - you seem to be trying to go touring using alpine bindings? Did you free the heel?

My only concern is that while you are venturing into these wildernesses, and off piste, you put your life at risk by not wearing a helmet Shocked

Bones, I did give serious consideration to the helmet but couldn't be bothered climbing into the loft to get it. A foolish risk taken I know! However the rucsac did actually contain walking boots and crampons to aid the return journey (we live on a hill...)

wigan, Nice pics. It wasn't that pleasant driving from St. Helens to the station at 7am for my trip to Carlisle.

Those flat areas do make me wonder whether the Wigan ski region is ideal for boarders. OTOH, I understand that the bus system is excellent.

i was in wigan this morning at around 11 and the place was at a standstill and very heavy snow.

wigan, Nice, i'm in Bolton at the moment, and wish i'd brought my ski's, a descent of the mighty Rivington Pike would probably be pretty good...

Pryle, click the big blue words! I should have just put them on display in the message but I was being good and following the instructions not to in the snowhead userguide thread Little Angel

I like the pietiflette idea. Will have to suggest it for the cafe specials board... No vin chaud was on offer, but they do sell hot Vimto.

Snow update - Some slush is forming on south facing slopes. However full cover still remains on all pistes, most resort footpaths and access roads (due to local council complete failure to grit anywhere Very Happy ). Visit soon before the season ends!!
