Poster: A snowHead

Plans for a £100m indoor ski resort, Snowtopia, in west Dublin have been rejected by planners. Originally rejected by Fingal County Council in February, the planning appeals board has now agreed the development would contravene local land zoning rules. The planners also referred to the lack of transport serving the area. ...The developers behind the 32,000m2 project are extremely disappointed by the decision. It had been suggested it would have created 500 much-needed construction jobs.

I think the rule states, permission shall not be granted for anything good.
This is yet another addition to the catalouge of sports facilities the Irish authorities have denied the people they serve. Tossers.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Fattes13, although the planners aren't concerned about viability, obviously not enough brown envelopes.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

This was never going to happen in the manner that the developers claimed. The idea was to get palnning permssion for mixed development of retail, leisure, office, residential and commerical - the indooor ski slope would have been dropped and replcaed with a football pitch and the developers get to keep the bits that make money.
The ski bit of this was never going to happen.
Delighted that both Fingal and ABP saw through this, pity some of the snowheads can't!

I'm not so sure killian, would a developer be brave/foolish enough to develop something like this when there are so many vacant similar developments all over the country, the ski slope would be the only unique thing, as we have far too many retail, leisure, office, residential and commerical units already.

Disappointing, but it must have been fanciful. Bord Pleanala wouldn't reject a half chance project, especially if it could create 500 jobs.

Peter, your right there are too many empty everthings but what the developer was looking for was planning permission, these are valid for 10 years. I think the land was zoned Z10 at this site so needs some significant leisure infrastruture, hence a half baked idea for a snowdome, it could have just as easily been a velodrome, 50 metre pool indoor skateboard park etc etc. The developers use these sort of announcements to try and develop political support that will apply pressure on the Council planners.
Another similiar one that was tried recently was some idea to build a disneyworld in Skerries. The amusement park was the hook but included in the proposal was 15,000 houses. Again the planners saw pass it.

killian, I remember the Disneyland idea, wouldn't be much fun going there at this time of year! Still these snowdomes are being built all over the world, why can't we have one!
