Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Anyone been to the Snowbombing Music Festival (Mayrhofen)?

I'm thinking about getting myself over to Mayrhofen for some music and skiing, but wondered if anyone had any experience of what's it's like?

The music line-up looks pretty good: http://www.nme.com/news/fatboy-slim/48713.

But what about the skiing? Is it really busy, or do most people tend to spend the days recovering from the night-before, rather than on the slopes?

I was there during Snowbombing week 07, although I didn't actually do any of the festival.

It wasn't at all busy. As you say, there are a lot of casualties not getting out of bed until lunchtime. Mayrhofen is very pretty in Spring, and Hintertux is just down the road if the conditions let you down (and is 100% worth a visit even if they don't).

It *was* rather slushy. Good fun finishing a run and having to maintain maximum speed on your way to the lift embarkation point, to ensure you aquaplane over the lake of freezing cold water just in front of it - Wheeee!

I worked in Mayrhofen last season, and Snowbombing was probably best week oof the season. Was sunny every day, still plenty of snow about, and not as busy as the half term weeks provided you stay away from Penken.

The lineup of the last couple of years seems to be much more DJs than bands, which isn't my cup o' tea so much...

I've been for the past two years. Slopes are quiet as you say because of apres-casualties. Music is top notch every night, and the bands are never on too late allowing a normal bed time if you don't want to stay up. There's been no issue with snow cover but I believe 07 was poor. The lineup should improve yet.

Any more questions? Cool

I've been for the past two years and would highly recommend it. The only issue I'd have with it is the date in the season; this year it began on 27th March but I believe next year is not until well into April, so it may be a bit of a gamble with conditions.

One thing I'd definitely recommend doing is the Arctic disco; you have to pre-book and pay extra for it but it's a fantastic experience. It's not often you get the chance to party into the night at the top of a mountain inside a huge igloo. Also the street party and forest party are not to be missed.

I went in 08 and had a great time. The line up was great, there was a good atmosphere both in resort and on the mountain, and the snow was good. We had a couple of days of warm spring sunshine and a few days when a snow storm hit, bringing lots of fresh snow, even down to resort! I think it was the first week of April and the last week of the season that the lifts ran. I don't think I got enough sleep though! The pistes are not that busy as people do get a late start, and the area is plenty big enough to go exploring and find quieter areas. Good variety of pistes from easy blues, fun reds and a few short but steep blacks. There was also a few longer blacks and some reasonable off piste under a couple of the chairs.

Go for it!

I was there the week after last year and despite the warm temperatures there was plenty of snow. This year I'll be there during Snowbombing but not as a paid up member - about thirty years too old for that.

Chris Bish, We'll be the oldest swingers in town. Actually, I'm a bit concerned that with Snowbombing some of my favourite evening haunts won't be accessible unless you've got a pass. Most evenings I end up in the sports bar of the Hotel Strass. An English guy, Brian Cristopher plays there nightly and he's excellent. I believe he'll be playing there that week this year - I just hope I can get to see him. If you fancy meeting up for a beer I'd be more than happy. I've always wanted to meet a snowHead

You may need some blag power to get into the Strass sports bar as it's usually a wristband only affair during the festival - along with the Arena/Garage nightclub and Schlussel Alm nightclub. Possibly worth approaching from inside via reception. Last year they had a mix of small and actually fairly major acts in there.

Saw Brian at SB a couple of years ago doing requests, all excellent Cool

I'm what the Sunday Times recently called a Graver.... in our mid 40s but have never stopped clubbing. I started work 30 years ago, to make the money to go clubbing (Lacy Lady, Goldmine, Rio, Zero 6 and Caister). Since then, I have survived on a diet of Jazz Funk, Brit Funk, Acid House, GoGo, Funky House and Trance. From such a history, I thought I was broad minded enough to get into anything with a dance beat. Then I came across the Snowbombing DJs in Tignes at Loop bar a couple of weeks ago. OMG, I have turned into my Dad!! It wasn't dance music at all (well, not for the hour I was there), it was just an impossible mix of bass beats and micro samples/random electro sounds. There wasn't so much a dance floor going on as a mad pogo'ing mosh pit. Perhaps the night got better, perhaps I was having an off night, perhaps I should now admit that I'm old and bow out of liking dance music, but either way it wasn't for me. I had thought of going to SB but am concerned that it is not what I would call clubbing music.

I'm up for something anywhere between Expansions by Lonnie Liston Smith and Silence by Tiesto, or Sandstorm by Darude, to name some oldies. Is Snow Bombing for me or should I stay at home waiting for my bus pass?

Corky, would be delighted to meet up. Have to do next week in Courmayeur first, so I'll let you know where and when. Never been to Mayhofen.

Chris Bish, Excellent. I'll send you a PM closer to the time. I've been to Mayrhofen a couple of times before and really like it. Hopefully you will too. Enjoy Courmayeur. 24 days until Ischgl for me.

surfstar, Fantastic idea - I wonder if they do them in a SPAM coloured costumes. As for artists netia24 personally I'm looking forward to seeing some of the expressionist works of Gustav Klimt, I believe he'll be in attendance alongside a popular disc jockey called Norman.
