Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Not in St Anton, according to this article in today's Sunday Times.

PG,

Can you find a resort that is hungry for the males? A male skier set off by a suicide sex-bomber will fit in well with your "war and piste" story.

I was just there this weekend. Think the ratio of men to woman has allways been about 7 to 1. The situation has not changed in years & i doubt it will depsite valiant efforts by the tourist board.
What I have noticed over the last few years is huge groups of guys especially from the UK. I dont know why they choose St Anton when a resort more suited to there ability would be beeter, like Seefeld or Lermoos . IMHO St Anton is wasted on them.
The key here is to go to less English speaking resorts in Austria , your find more woman ! Theres def more in Ischgl.

In St Anton in January, in a chalet hotel of 30 there were 4 women guests, 2 of which we had brought ourselves. It's pretty much the same in most ski resorts, the only women available tend to be the seasonaires. Mind you, the year before I ended up skiing with 4 women in the same resort.

stanton, why do you think that your namesake is wasted on them?

The only resort that there seemed to be more than women than men in was Mayrhofen ... could just have been a particularly bad/good week (depending on your point of view !!).

2 resorts I have been to with a near 50/50 ratio of men and women are Val T and Solden.
Both resorts have a high Dutch/Belgian contingent - this seems to influence the mix.

Just from casual observation. I get the impression that a couple of weeks skiing experience & they feel there ready for the expert terrain when in fact a small resort would be just sufficient. I cant see the point of going to St Anton & skiing Piste allday when you can do the same in MUCH MUCH cheaper resorts.
The main reason they go there is to get absolutley shitfaced which is a probable reason why many woman (non English) do not go to St Anton. That also begs the question why they would want to drink in one of the most expensive towns in Austria when 10minutes down the road the beer is 1/3rd the price !!

stephen bleakley

The continentals very much go skiing as family's or a mix of friends . Over here In Holland its not to uncommon for the you to hook up for a ski holiday with someone else girlfriend or girlfriends sister when work/leave circumstances prevent going as a couple.

St Anton has become (more so last 10yrs) synonymous with the English speaking world & has therefore detracted alot of continental europeans who supply the bulk of the female skiers .

I was in Val d'Isere 3rd week in Jan in a chalet holiday. 2 groups comprising 14 in total. 6 men and 8 women.

So it DOES happen.

What was also noticable (ie apart from the fact that there were more women) was that the language was worse, the drunken behaviour more unruly, the humour more toiletry and the "what goes on tour after dark with people other than one's UK partner stays on tour" count was higher.

In ALL the above categories the 'influence' was female. Discuss!

If the ratio is so good, then why do all my male colleagues have young ladies literally throwing themselves at them, while no good looking young male clients have ever thrown themselves at me (even when I was young!) Good grief, am being put off the thought of St Anton altogether by this. Is it really that infested with the great British male skiing contingent? And in what way is it expensive? The accomodation seems fairly reasonable, the ski pass no more than most other places? Is it just in the beer prices?

G-Rock, I wouldn't call it expensive myself, but then again I'm comparing it to places like Zermatt, Val d'Isere. All the world class resorts tend to be on the expensive side, if you go somewhere smaller it's probably cheaper. As mentioned in my other post, there's always women to be found in a ski resort, even St Anton, you just need to know where to look.

easiski, knowing many many me as I do and having been one for a while myself (quite a long while actually) I would think that male clients fall into one of two camps:

1. They are macho muppets and so are overwhelmed by a women who can ski far better than they could ever hope for
2. They are nice blokes but are intimidated by a female ski instructor (not a sexist thing - they would feel intimidated by a male one)
3. They are not looking for any 'extra curricular'
4. They are one or more of:

# over-confident
# overweight
# over the hill
# overbearing

5. They are self-confident, well-adjusted, happy go lucky guys who are fun to be with, generous and unselfish

The "5" club is looking for members

G-Rock, don't get the wrong idea about St Anton. I go there 5 or 6 times a season so have plenty of experience of the place.

It is not at all expensive compared with Courchevel, Zermatt, Val d'Isere, Verbier et al.

When I was in Val D I paid €25 for a small portion of chips, frankfurter and a cup of coffee. That would cost you €15 or less in St Anton. Not cheap but relatively. If you go in the big name places e.g. Mooserwirt, Crazy Kangaroo you pay the big bar prices - like anywhere. But there are loadsa bars where you don't pay such premium prices and large beers cost €3 during happy hour.

Same with restaurants. You can eat at Hazienda on New Years eve for €120 for a 9 course meal (wine not included of course) or have the set meal at the chinese restaurant for €20 including beer.

Same with the nightclubs .... although to be honest when I go I'm always totally clear how much I've spent.

Don't get me wrong. There are groups of guys. Most of them a mix of groups 2-5 above. Some a mix of 1 and 4. There are also groups of women. I met a group of 5 last year in April who were up for a great party and there's a mad group coming out the first week of March.

Be aware! They are looking for type 5 males rolling eyes Laughing Toofy Grin Very Happy

Actually the KK is one of the cheapest places, if you compare the actual measure 0.3l with 0.3 litre somewhere else.

OK,you can go to Scotty's for a €1 happy hour but lets get serious, is this what you go to St Anton for, its dire. I would compare the ambiance/atmospehere to somewhere between Club 18 30's & a British Legion club Crying or Very sad

Getting back to the woman. The peak time for Woman in St Anton is Xmas/New Year. This is normally fully booked out by germans & regulars wink The big tour companys start hording in the tourists from Jan thru March & consequently the Ratio of Men to Woman goes pear shaped

I really liked St. Anton as a village and would like to go back when there were less maniacs on the slopes, yes there were lots of groups of blokes but there were also quite a few ladies around. Beer prices were not too bad considering. Compared to a lot of resorts I have been to the bars/clubs staying open later make up for the slightly higher prices. The thing that really impressed me was the friendliness of the local people and the help of the guys in the ski hire shop I used, ski testing/swapping skis, nothing was a problem to them.

stanton, I knew 'Crazy' Kangaroo looked wrong when I spelt it. To be honest I've been in there once - about 5 years ago. But as it was crap I left.

I think you are misleading the audience. The point I was making is that there are plenty of bars around catering for different tastes at different prices. For apres up the mountain there's Sen hutte (spelig prob wrong) for oompah, Griabli for jim & chris's singalong rock, taps next to KK's for piped music while chatting etc. Quieter there's Underground on the Piste and Kamin Stube

Down in St Anton there's The Underground for live music and cheap food, Jacksys next door for older clientele in english pub setting, Plaxtl for music, Dorfstube for quiet, older, Fang bar in Nasserein etc

Also, I know of many singlish women which come out in March/April. All british, all regulars, all multi-trip ladies. They come at this time because

a) it's their second or third trip
b) they come as a girls group ie without their kids
c) it's warmer
d) they come as a girls group ie without their bloke

Point taken about the range of bars.

The ratio of boys to girls in St Anton is very definitely different to other resorts. I have never felt so outnumbered in my life - at one point in one of the bars there last February, as a group of 3 girls, we were the ONLY women in the place at one point in the evening.

B00thy, When I was there a couple of weeks ago the Underground in St. Anton was really buzzing, the resident musicians were great and the atomosphere was superb. Some of the other bars that people were raving about were nowhere near as lively. I guess it depends on what you're after when you want to relax and have a laugh.

I know the Underground has good atmosphere but its kind of lost its way over the years. If you were there when they opened there doors some 20 odd yrs ago & upto a few years back it was VERY GOOD. The musicians were swapped round/out regulary . The last few years its been the same musicians (although good) if your there for a while it becomes a bit tedious. They have maintained there food prices but to cover the food is now the quantity is disguised by being served on childrens sized plates.

Regarding City/Village. The population of St Anton has approx doubled in the last ten years & if you look at some photos or be up on Rendl and look down in the not to distant past (5-7yrs )you will see distinct villages ie St Anton OberDorf, Dorf , Naserein, St Jakob now you just see on Town . Call it progress I call it a Mess Sad

This is not to say its has not happened else where . You only have to drive up the SilvrettaTal to Ischgl to see the same thing (See,Kappl,Ischgl almost joint together) but at least when you get to Ischgl theres more Woman Very Happy

stanton, I take your point, if you have seen that many changes over the years it must be quite disheartning. I enjoyed the place though. If it got too much bigger it would spoil it and god forbid turn it into somewhere like Sauze which would be a real shame.
Seeing as you know the area pretty well can you recommend a reasonable place to stay in Lech, if such a place exists. And are there any women there. Puzzled
