Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

tuxpoo, buy Carré Neige with the ski pass - there shouldn't be any problem about age - plenty of older people than your mum around. (Carte Neige is for seasons I understand)

I have a mental image of your mother - quite slim with a determined look in her eye and a spring in the step (our cross country tracks are full of women like that, and very old gents too, though they've all been doing it since childhood). If she's skinny-ish then hip padding probably a very good idea. If she is well padded round that area already, much less need. No need to gild the lily; some people have built in hip pads.

Yes, the pavements are far more dangerous than the pistes. I use two ski poles when it's icy, and always carry my stuff in a backpack.

This is the sort of thing you put on your shoes (though that's not a helpful link as its Amazon US AND out of stock). They always sell similar things in resorts.

As folks have said beginners don't tend to fall heavy if at all, and mum will be very unlucky if its totally solid underfoot on the piste.

Mind you, I was with a middle-aged lady once on a piste/track at Wengen when I was about 10 and she was just standing and lost her balance and fell sideways. Broke her hip, Her husband (a surgeon) couldn't believe she had really hurt herself and tried to make her get up ...

Ouch. And I don't personally agree that beginners don't fall "heavy". A very common fall which can do a fair bit of damage is a slow speed fall, with skis not disengaging - knee twisting job. Not at all unusual for that to happen to beginners, especially if the snow is quite heavy and "lumpy" (the sort of snow you get in the afternoon on a busy piste when it's been snowing all morning). Not that hip padding would help with that.

I disagree on beginners not going down hard. Ok they won't enjoy the high speed yardsale but also they haven't necessarily developed the fine balance that stops most of us toppling over 10 or more times a day and a fall without corrective or reflex mitigating action can be a slam. Any accomplished skiers want to try catching a heel edge as a beginner snowboarder to see how gentle the unanticipated is when you're not going fast ? wink

I'm going skiing with my mum next week, she's 69!

She's quite happy on greens and gentle blues, going at her own pace. She's bought a helmet this year just to be on the safe side.

Beginners can fall "heavy" and badly but it's a bit of a miscopnception that they fall often. If they're relatively sporty and coordinated they shouldnt fall too often. Padding a good idea though, particularly if the snow's hard.

agreed - indeed unsporty people often manage to learn without much falling too - with the right sort of instructor.

Ok, She's read the thread (and will continue, no doubt) and more determined to go for it than ever.
She has a couple of worries at the moment..

Is there an ice making machine in [my] fridge?

What's she going to call herself on Snowheads? (could be a blog looming)

If you can help with either of these, answers.....
Very Happy

Go, go ageconcern! Hmm, doesn't have quite the right ring, but taken literally I suppose it is accurate.

Could have done with hip pads myself around midnight last night - I came off my bike on wet cobbles. Just a big haematoma down there, but I've bruised and sprained my shoulder. Should be OK (I hope) as I've got 5 weeks till I ski, but it may mess up my fitness program a bit.

allanm, well you wouldn't want to over train wink

I'm a bit concerned that, for example, going skiing at 69 warrants an exclamation mark Shocked Being 9 centuries old myself and going with a high mountain guide next month who is 63, this ageist stuff is worrying Confused I thought I was just getting into my stride Madeye-Smiley

allanm, tuxpoo ageconcern Having been teaching skiing now for over 30 years, I've taught a number of older people to ski. The oldest beginner I ever taught was 82 and his wife was 78. they didn't get good, but did ski every day and could plough and stop at the end of the week. Good on them - they realised a lifetime ambition. Very Happy I've also taught a number of others, the oldest I taught who became a good skier started at 64. I also know a number of peeps who go on skiing into their 80's and even 90s. If you can walk, you can ski.

What is important is private lessons, taken very much at a nice steady pace as set by the student, not the instructor. Also patience. beanie1, is right - there's no reason for beginners to fall often. I've said it before on here - if a beginner is falling all the time then the instructor isn't doing his/her job properly.

Enjoy! snowHead
