Poster: A snowHead
|
Looking to bag a bargain for a few days pre christmas - if there is any snow. We are hoping to fly 18th return on 23rd. Have looked at TO discounts and they are week bookings. What is the best way of getting the best prices for accommodation etc for a few nights as a late booking. Family of 5 destination either driving distance from Geneva or milan
Many Thanks

pembsflyer, Look on the tourist office websites for resorts in the areas you are interested in.
You will only be able to get late booking for short periods by booking direct with hotels who think they will not be full with week long bookings.
And if course, you will have to arrange your own flights/car hire etc.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

pembsflyer, won't be easy, as the busy Christmas week starts on 19th, so the chances of a "bargain" are slim. Your best bet might be to stay somewhere like Sallanches, very easy drive from Geneva, and close to a range of good places to ski. Or if you want to be in a resort, go for the week from 19th, in an apartment, and just forget the last few days. A small apartment for that week, in one of the smaller resorts, would cost about 100 euros a night. At the very last minute you might find someone willing to rent you a place for just 5 nights, probably more likely with a private owner than a big agency. If you did that, and wanted to get an early start skiing on 19th (which should be a quiet day on the slopes, though a very busy one on the roads) stay somewhere like Sallanches on the evening of the 19th and get up to a resort early on the Saturday morning. Ski all day, and you'd have access to your accommodation from about 4 pm.

Yes it will. There's plenty out there. Call or email a few tourist offices and you'll get offers.

pembsflyer, here's a link... www.pv-holidays.com ... 5 days (or whatever you want pre New Year) from 18th no problem at all. Don't listen to people with scarcity mentalities.

Hmm. Which particular accommodation were you suggesting, Bode Swiller? I don't think it's as easy as it looks on that link - I tried to book those dates in several of the places, and the system didn't want to let me. And the prices are pretty high - just as expensive as booking somewhere direct for a week, and not using the last couple of days, as I suggested.

pam w, Christmas week is a buyer's market right now, especially if you only need accommodation. In fact, it always has been a buyers market because most people stay at home for Christmas and look to go away for New Year. It's worse for accommodation owners this year because there is uncertainty over snow conditions and uncertainty over economic factors. France has a particular problem in that many in their biggest overseas markets are shunning the rip off bar and restaurant prices etc. There is a definite strong move in the tour op market towards Italy and Austria. Of course some places are popular and full for Christmas but there is soooooooooooooooo much accommodation free all over the alps. Bother to spend a few hours on the email and phone and you'd find out rather than jumping on the scarcity bandwagon. I emailed a dozen places in Austria in September and booked one of them. Lately nearly all of those that I approached have emailed me offers. Still going begging. I have got pals right now holding back on Christmas who want to go to France for Christmas week and they are very comfortable that they'll get almost whatever they want.

Bode Swiller, yes, I know there's loads of accommodation swilling about, and much of it quite cheap (and probably go on that way, given the fact that prospects for good snow at Christmas are still pretty uncertain). Booking odd periods, though, is always a hassle, especially in France - as illustrated by the PV website to which you linked. I couldn't be bothered to try more than half a dozen but none of them would let me book that period.
If I was wondering about Christmas at this point I'd be holding back too - for snow, rather than accommodation reasons.

i agree with Bode Swiller, normally my place is booked real early for xmas but this year no interest at all even after discounting 30%

pam w, Not surprised. For anything slightly off menu you'd need to pick the phone up (such a chore I know). Always best anyway if you want a deal.
