It snowed overnight, all day and is still snowing now, with more forecast for most of tomorrow. At a guess I'd say 30cm or so at resort level, and more up top although it was a windy day so God knows where it will all settle. No photos from on the hill, but this tree is outside my hotel and was entirely green yesterday:
The new snow was certainly needed as not too much of the ski domain was open, and it was beginning to get icy in most places. Should get some fresh tracks tomorrow...

Excellent - should be there in 2.5 weeks - hopefuly they get a few more dumps.
Quick question its the first time over the pond for most of us - group of 13 coming in
from Canada - should we just buy the lift tickets when we get there - there is a slight
discount (5%) if you buy through swisspass.com - can you upgrade to an international
pass just for the days you want to go over to Cervinia for lunch.

sawni, sorry, I'm not able to answer your questions about the lift pass. This is my first visit to Zermatt and I didn't buy my liftpass in person so I'm not sure what the rules are about upgrading. Hopefully someone else will be able to answer.

rob@rar,
sawni, you can upgrade on a daily basis, it's something like 40 CHF per day extra.

Great piccy Rob@rar, can't wait to get out there in 20 days time.

Still snowing hard; probably more than 40cm at resort level. The downside of this is that I've been here for three days and still haven't seen the Matterhorn. If this situation continues I'm going to ask for a refund.

It snowed all night and continues this morning, although not quite as hard as yesterday. The forecast is for more snow today, perhaps clearing a little this afternoon. Some more photos from around the village yesterday on my blog.

where were you on Saturday? We had lovely views of it from Klein Matterhorn and Gornergrat.

snowbandit, the forecast I saw was for about 50cm of fresh - I think we got close to that at resort level and a bit more on the slopes.
Steve Sparks, I didn't arrive in the resort until after dark on Saturday, and I still haven't seen it! But tomorrow will be the day

Hope the wind drops - spent too long on Sunday stuck in a gondola on Rothorn bobbing in the wind
Look out off piste though - even 50cm will only disguise the rocks not cover them

Weather was much nicer today, although bitterly cold above Trockener Steg. But I'm not complaining because I finally got to see the Matterhorn. It was worth the wait.

wait!

sawni, there seemed to be much more open today (we only skied a small sector because that was all that was needed for the course I'm on), including the link over to Italy. Light snow is forecast tomorrow, so on piste conditions should continue to be good.

Hurray! It is definitely worth the wait. Out of 8 trips to Zermatt I have only seen the Matterhorn twice! Hope the course goes well - counting down the days until I am back out there now!

I took this on a mobile phone a few years ago - the mountain is so beautiful, the camera scarcely matters!

yeah glowy red matterhorn is great
sawni its worth looking at the cost of day upgraddes to just getting the full international pass, if works out cheaper over a certain amount of days..can't quite recall at present though..and if you don't use it at all due to the link over being closed then you can get a refund onthe international part anyway

I remember my first sight of it back in January 1986. It was our first day and we had fantastic conditions at Sunegga. However we had been in cloud all day and were returning from the summit of the Rothorn right down into the village. The skiing was amazing and as we dropped down towards the village the terrain became really characterful. We were having a ball and voted the run 10 out of 10. Just then the cloud unexpectedly cleared and there was the Matterhorn. 11 out of 10 I won't ever forget that.
BTW is the new Gondola open yet up to Trockener Steg ?

I think I saw it tootle past the on one of the schwarzesee webcams, but I don't think its open yet, they usually open new lifts the weekend before xmas..but not news on it on the website rob@rar any news on it in resort?

I like the way Mr Matterhorn nearly always has that amusing Jack Charlton-esque combover of cloud. Here's my effort from last New Year's morn.
My goodness me, Robert, I'm a jealous man that you're there and I'm - well - here.

Fantastic pictures - can't wait - just a quick question - do most of the establishments in Switzerland take Euros or will we need to get some
Swiss Francs? Are the prices only marked in CHF or both?

Only just spotted this thread...now feeling quite sick with envy. We were there last weekend, but had to leave on Sunday (i.e. just before the massive dump of snow)...still, the pistes were nice and managed my first powder turns of the season (all 4 of them).
rob@rar, were you with the BASI group trapped in the Rothorn gondola on Sunday morning? We got chatting to some of them as we sat for 20 mins waiting for the wind to drop

sawni, I think most places take CHFs only (it is their national currency...), but if you're offered a price in EUR I'd expect it to be at a poor rate. You can get CHFs from an ATM, so not really an issue.

Jonny luv plums, thanks, I was getting a bit worried about collecting my car on Saturday. You never know who is going to be lurking in the shadows
Very, very cold at Trockner Steg today, especially as I was doing Central Theme Clinics all day (basically snowploughing or standing around getting frozen). My feet have not been that cold in a long, long time. Must resurrect my old boot heaters. But apart from the cold it was a nice day, piste conditions are superb on that part of the hill with really fast, grippy snow.

Don't get me started on the Matterhorn, (great photos guys) I got the piste taken out of me 'cos I couldn't see it without taking a pic. Every angle, every light condition, it looks different, I can never stop looking at it in Zermatt - had some great times there the last three Christmases - will miss her this year...
