Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Should Christmas ski trips be banned ?

I have to say that I have spent some of the last few Christmas's in the US where we could have gone skiing if we wanted (about 1.5hr drive). Although last Christmas we were in Phoenix and there are no skiing areas anywhere near there as far as I am aware!!!

I am not really bothered where we spend Christmas as long as I am with family and friends!!

Last year was our first new year trip, we went on boxing day (some ungodly hour) it was perfect. Christmas day with close friends ( they dont ski) and off skiing the next.
Same again this year. However next year is my turn to cook, so I will just have to be organised. Although I have booked a 5pm flight this year so that we dont worry about drinking too much on christmas day! Little Angel i am so excited

Spent most of the last 12-15 Christmases in the Alps. It's my favourite day of the year. Just me and Jane, a little bit of skiing, chat to the family by phone or Skype, open a couple of little presents, Christmas Dinner, no stress. Perfect. Smile

I am currently sobbing into the keyboard as this will be our first time in about 15 years of being in the UK at Crimble...usually we have had a rob@rar experpience [see above]. Already am dreading having to take part in all the nonsense/fakery and the prospect of having to spend a LOT of time cooped up at home with all that utter garbage on TV and...am going to stop or the keyboard will explode with my tears Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

No Christmas ski trips must stay - I have just booked 2 weeks in Whistler with Just_Jill! Twisted Evil and have no kids so watching kids on bikes is likely to get me an asbo or restraining order!Shocked

Also it stops us getting nagged to visit either set of Outlaws as we will not be in the country. Evil or Very Mad Also with a slingbox I can get the rubbish TV on the laptop where ever I am so no need to miss the Doctor Who specials or Jason and the Argonauts NehNeh

Everyone reading this - now stand - and repeat after me (and good ole Billy Shakespeare)

I will not depart this wonderous isle on Christmas day
This realm of only fools and horses or Dr Who
This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

You may now sit down

I'm stuck with the home routine for Christmas but my choice would always be to ski. Like others I find the rampant commercialism too just much and applaud those who have managed to escape it - I'm still working on it. Some good thoughts here from moneysaving guru Martin Lewis http://blog.moneysavingexpert.com/2009/11/10/is-it-time-to-ban-christmas-presents/

I have just read that article and IMO, besides being a right tight fisted git, he probably has a few sociological (and psychological) problems that would take at least 3 ghosts to sort out

Having worked the last 7 Christmas weeks, and doing the meals, pies, puddings, special bloody vegetarian versions of them too (7 to do this year Shocked ), it might be nice to have a Christmas off. Thing is though it is popular (booked up ages in advance usually), and we need the cash, so will keep doing it I suppose and make use of those handy pine trees wink

Yep Christmas skiing; fun, lots less work (if you are holiday), and usually fairly calm on the pistes before the mad New Years week rush. Will be more nuts next year though with I expect most ski companies pushing together the two weeks as Crimbo will be on a Saturday (looks like another year of having to work that week...).

in garbure we trust, last year was the first time in about 15 seasons that I've has Christmas day off. This was in fact slightly annoying, as we get paid double time for public holidays.

Well christmas is the whole reason I started skiing at the ripe old age of 30. Me and the (new) missus had just started working and wanted to get away from the parents for the break and after talking to guys at work they persuaded us to head off to Romania for our first trip. Enjoyed that so much went the next xmas to the Dolomites.

14yrs later still skiing but have not been away at xmas since, that is until this year where we are all off as a family to Le Corbiere for chistmas and my birthday.

Whoo hooo, can't wait snowHead snowHead

We went to Winter Park last christmas (first skiing trip).

I was looking forward to the whole notion of not arguing with my husband about where we will have Christmas lunch.

Instead I got a ear bashing about how rubbish the buffet in the hotel was (he did have a point, the joint of meat on the carvery looked like it should have still been mooing) and how his Mam's would be better etc.

We did get to ski though. Very Happy

I am upset this year because we come home xmas eve, and I'm gonna have to put up with his bloody grandma for half a day Evil or Very Mad

No chance of me skiing Christmas. OH never gets a full week off over the Christmas season - this year he's working Christmas Eve (until 9am Christmas Day) and Boxing day. Unless of course we get a white Christmas...

Would be nice though, although I'd miss cooking my own X'mas dinner - Goose this year!

Keep the British away from Austria at Christmas as they may want to turn it from a religious festival to a shopping fest.

Actually, Flagstaff is only 1.5 hrs from Phoenix and usually had quite a bit of snow from what I understand. Granted, population in Pheonix are there largely to "escape" the winter so may or may not be aware of a ski resort nearby. Wink

Never been there in winter. But summer there was beautiful (and cool too).Smile

Easter is fine for skiing; even though in 2011, due to Easter being so later most people will be on the beach in Mallorca, the only place with snow will give you altitude sickness. Maybe Skiing in the Tibetan Himalayas really is on the cards soon ?

Just had my hours for 27th Dec e-mailed from the school. OMG, 6 hour straight starting at 11am. So if anyone sees a lunatic running through Manchester airport about 6am – please get out of the way. Toofy Grin (I will make it)

We had 3 years running skiing

We had Xmas the week before - Turkey, presents the lot.

Was great as it was all done and out the way when everyone else was in full on panic mode. Santa visited us skiing with a few prezzies pour les enfants. For us it also meant a longer gap between Xmas and twins birthday 4/1 so all worked

Ski lessons for Christmas presents..... job done! wink

Our little boy only had his first Christmas at home (didn't know much about it). His Christmas's since then have been spent skiing and he loves it, while his friends think Christmas is just about getting loads of presents!! He writes a letter to Father Christmas asking for a couple of little things and gives him the address of the accomodation so presents can be delivered there!! Little Angel

Last year we didn't have a chimney, so he left Father Christmas a key with the Reindeer food so he could get in! Smile

Not such a big issue this year as get to escape to Kaprun on Boxing Day, I can suffer the descent of my family for a day. Brother did have the cheek to moan that we were abandoning him on Boxing day. I thought I was kindly giving him and girlfriend the loan of a big house in the best city in the UK!

you'd never get my mother-in-law to do that. She lives about 1/2 a mile away from us, so for her Christmas is with us, or with her dog! Fortunately she doesn't like to stay out too long, we have to fetch her by car in time for a Scotch before lunch and take her home after the Queen's speech, so one of us has to stay "dry" till after then. Hence, like Mrs skimottaret, I am bound by the guilt thing rolling eyes . This is the same treasure who insists I have to cook lunch for her on Mother's Day - hubby wanted to take us out but she was aghast at the idea as wherever we chose would have Skullie KIDS Skullie about. My (adult) daughter did the cooking one year, and m-i-l told hubby she preferred me to do it Mad

This sounds like unreasonable behaviour - I'm sure you could get a divorce from such a mean MIL...
