I've got a possible week based in Bourg St Maurice on March 7, followed by a week in Sestriere on March 14 - any ideas/advice on how to get from Bourg to Sestriere on the 14th?

Jan Henderson,
A car would be best.
You will have to drive all the way down the valley almost to Chambery and pick up the N6 which takes you to the Fresus tunnel and into Italy through to Oulx and onto Sestriere.
The train will have to be BSM to Chambery and then onto the Turin, again stopping at Oulx..and then local cab/bus.
Not very far on the map but I would expect it to take half a day driving at least...

Took us 2.5 hours from Val Thorens to Serre Chevalier via Frejus tunnel. Train would be another option, but there is no need to go as far as Turin, BSM to Chambery (I think) , then change, you can get off at Oulx, and bus to Sestriere is just a short trip.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I think Christopher is planning on doing the same journey by train around the same time. Perhaps PM him?

Helen Beaumont, I am indeed doing this journey but instead of final destination being Sestriere, it is Serre Chevalier.
Jan Henderson, Easiest way and quickest I imagine would be to drive.
As Helen Beaumont, said you can take the train.
I'm taking the train from Bourg to Oulx in Italy. Oulx is a town, similar to Bourg as in it is at the bottom of a lot of roads to large ski areas. €25 single, it requires one change in Chambery. Effectively you jump on the TGV to Paris at Boug, get off at Chambery and jump on the Milan TGV (artesia) to Oulx. I'm not sure whether there is a bus up to Sestriere, but I imagine there would be. As a taxi from Oulx Sestriere is going to cost a fair bit. The train takes 4 hours + including the change in Chambery.
This is the website you'll need: http://www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-train

Thanks for the responses and advice.
Car is not an option, so it looks like the train.
The Sestriere week is a definite, the Bourg week still to be finalised, and depends on finances, so will have to make the decision a bit nearer the time.

Jan Henderson, Christopher, "bourg" means "town". Please don't call it "bourg", call it BSM if you can't be bothered to type Bourg St Maurice, but don't use just "Bourg" as it really annoys me

and as for "Bourg to Val" That would be Bourg en Bresse to Val Cenis, obviously.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

nbt, while you are at it, can you ask people to stop posting 'driving to France' threads, they are really irritating me.
Thanks,

nbt, no problem BSM it is then in short. I understand that there are multiple places called Bourg in France, i.e. Bourg en Bresse.

Having started this thread by referring to 'Bourg St Maurice' I thought subsequent references to 'Bourg' would be acceptable - just goes to show how easy it is to transgress the Code of the Pedant Police.
Thanks, nbt, for taking the time to put me straight on that one.
By the way, I think your location's probably called Manchester - people who call it Mann-Chess-Toh really annoy me.
Ho, hum...
