Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Supermarket near Val thorens

Self catering in Val Thorens this year. Anyone know where the nearest normal priced (not high mountain price) super market is? I am assuming Moûtiers, but it looks a long way down the road for an evening trip down. How long does it take to get to Moûtiers? Anything closer?

ringingmaster, Largest is at Albertville, Moutiers has a couple of 'normal' sized supermarkets and a Lidl. It is a fair drive from VT. Best buy enough for the week on the way up. Nothing of note any closer!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

ringingmaster,

Moutiers is a long way down, but then Val Thorens is the highest French resort. It takes about a half hour depending on conditions, unless of course you have local 73 plates, then it will probably take about 12 minutes.
As Boredsurfing said Albertville has the larger supermarkets but I prefer carrefour in Moutiers, it is a decent size, good produce and we have found it a better price for the things we buy. There is also a Simply which is cheaper still, quieter but not always the same quality.

ringingmaster, I wouldn't bother to go all the way down there during the week - it's a holiday! Do a big, carefully planned, shop at the outset (having already packed some vital supplies in the car from UK, where almost everything is now cheaper) and then top up locally as required.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

ringingmaster, As pam w and Boredsurfing, , said, do a big shop on the way to the resort.

ringingmaster, Boredsurfing, is right the best is to stop at Alberville, there is a Champion there also a Decathlon for any last minute gear purchases, you can also fill up, if you have a diesel they sell it with the additive that stops it from freezing, as others have said once your up at VT you won't want to drive back down! it can get icy up there and windy. What day are you travelling we got caught out a couple of years back when we went to Moutiers to the Champion and it was closed on Sundays, might have changed now, i noticed that in Bourg the supermarkets both now open on a Sunday.
PS don't forget the snow chains Toofy Grin

Personally I prefer to go on a couple of junctions to the smaller super U rather than the champion it might be exit 29? but it's the one after the big electricity station on the left. The super U is never that crowded and being more compact you can whizz round in about 20 minutes and then you're good to go. Also petrol there at decentish prices IIRC.

As of when? Last season the intermarche was open Sunday morning but the U was closed all day sunday

Thanks everyone - I was coming to the conclusion that the mid week top-up trip I usually do at Bourg when at Arc 1800 is not going to be realistic at Val T. Will stop on the way up for a week’s worth. Kids will just have to sit on it for the last hour Happy

OK, Still planning....

Is the Moutier supermarket before or after the tunnel.
We travel up on Easter Sat, and we generally make the effort to get up the tarentaise by 10:30AM to miss the traffic / tunnel. Wouldn't want to do our shopping for an hour and then find it drops us right in the middle of the queue for the tunnel.
Do I even need to go through the problematic tunnel to get to Val T?

ringingmaster, I don;t think you go through the tunnel to get to VT, you carry "straight on" in moutiers rather then bending left as if going up the Tarentaise
