Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I looked at Val thorens 2 days ago and it looked like they were skiing - I thought it was a previously stored image, but couldn't find anything to suggest that it was, but if not I was surprised to see them skiing.

waynos, I've had a look, that seems to be around 1800-1900 metres, not as high as VT I think. It seems from the comments above that there might be more snow in Austria at the moment. Is this usual?

Megamum, I think it is. The Eastern Alps usually get more snow earlier.

philw, So how can you tell what is 'now time' and what is stored, for example, this one looks too good to be true, but I can't see a date on it

Yourvaltonet image as you linked to looks about right
This one is running an out of date image - there is a date on the left http://livecam.valthorens.com/index.php?langue=2

hence confusion, though philw, yours looks most believable

it's very cold everywhere - some bits and pieces of snow here down to 1500m or so today. Two days ago, though with no precipitation, the maximum temperature all day was about -3 degrees! Still means absolutely zilch about the weather in store for the ski season though.

Megamum, the Val Thorens website is frozen on a picture from last winter, I guess it looks nicer than a half snowy view! You can use this link to see the archive http://livecam.valthorens.com/php/show_panorama_hires.php?langue=2, but was turned off on the 9th September.

The Valthonet one is still updating, and has handy timestamps in the corner. Very Happy

From the Valthoren.com site the main 360 deg cam has, in past years, run through the summer. It's set by the ski school meeting place and overlooks the Retour. I expect they didnt want people to see the building work on the new covered 'magic carpet' lift. It would have looked rather messy. I believe it's now complete though, so we may see the camera updated soon. Smile

Definitely snow in Laax since mid week, and we're sitting just fractionally below the snow line here as I write. To think it was 25 degrees last weekend (reportedly)

davidof, and what say the paysans about the prodigious great clumps of rowanberries in all the trees? I've never seen them so chunky.

In rural Lancashire the sloes have never been so bountifull in recent years, a local farmer has said this is a sure sign of a cold winter with more than average snow fall - let us hope he is right - I am not entirely convinced I have heard it all before -cynicism increases with the passing of time Puzzled - but I will ski Andermatt again this season -never lets you down!

WiRED, I was in La Rosiere last week and it did snow a little, however the snow cannons were working well building up a base, so it was definately snowing in La Rosiere. The Sunday Times travel section this week had a piece on La Rosiere as the ideal village for families, specifically mentioning Ski Espirit and Chalet Scharzi.

rolling eyes Thanks for the heads-up David. I read the article but skipped the bit about family friendly resorts (no kids Laughing). I'll go back and read it again. I use LaRos as a sort of benchmark for weather. I've been there 6 times or so, so I know how it should look.

WiRED, it's a little early for snow, it usually arrives early to mid Nov, we've had to dig out a path to our front door in mid Nov before now but often the early snow melts away if temperatures aren't consistently low. Because La Rosiere is high and the terrain is rocky 40cms of base is needed before the piste bashers can operate. It was cold enough last week for the snow cannons to operate to build up a base. As you know the resort you'll be pleased to hear that the lift company is planning to invest 30 - 40 million Euros extending the lift system, there are new lifts planned to go down to Montvalezan village which will extend the skiing through the forests and it's rumoured there could be a chairlift to Italy.

That's great news! Although it did feel like a great adventure getting over there on a 1.5 mile(?) drag lift.
