Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

As above, due to Sea France strike action, they have closed the port of Calais.

Excellent work from a company on the verge of going under... Laughing

Toursists can be diverted to the Tunnel but expect delays and the M20 is on STACK

JT, Always a worry when a ferry company shows signs of going under! What's the basis for your statement (I'm worried about impact on my bookings for next year)

Helen Beaumont,

Sea France have a re-staffing package to negotiate..which is what this strike is about...AFAIU
and the French staff do not take kindly to this sort of thing so get quite stroppy, and the Ports operate
on a 1 out, all out type arrangement as it is all done through the local Chambre Commerce.
That is why you get office workers and police involved as they are all affiliated, I believe.

It is possible that they will have a series of one-day strikes so hopefully travellers get lucky between these days..
and of course, the backlog is cleared.

If more strikes are scheduled then all modes of travel will be affected and the tunnel will have big delays just to get rid of the backlog they inherit
Normally the Ferry OPs injunctions break the strike in a working day, but the backlog of traffic can take 24hrs to clear...

If you saw the quality of their boats its no wonder no one wants to sail with them. With an ageing, dilapidated fleet and a communist workforce hopefully Sarkozy will shut it down and sell the slots to a company that want to run a proper service.

bar shaker, strange, I always thought that Sea France boats are better than P&O?? (and miles better than Norfolkline)

bar shaker, last Sea France ferry we were on seemed too be in good condition. Not used them for a while though, we normally go by the Eurotunnel. The exception is in the next couple of weeks.

This strike is because the statutory consultation process has been dragged out as long as it could be..and a verdidct is due next week.
I would think this is a last gasp effort to influence that verdict.

I can't imagine P&O boats being second best to any of the other operators and they have two brand new super ferries being built as we speak.

Within the last year we have sailed with Sea France, Norfolkline and P&O, Sea France have the best boats, and have always seemed most efficient at loading/unloading, with Norfolkline being the slowest. I certainly hope they keep going to keep up price competition - though at current prices it is hard to see how any of them can make any money - have priced up our December trip for 4 adults in a people carrier with topbox for skis, return fares are £34 Norfolkline, £47 SeaFrance, and £50 P&O - tunnel is £116. At £50 or less return surely it can't be profitable?
