Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Buying Boots for First Time...

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
... So I have read through seven pages of advice on here and done some research. Im heading to a ski shop in the northwest tomorrow to get sorted. However still seams like a bit of a minefield.

Things I have to do/look out for.

1) Be honest about my ability and what I will be using the boots for.
2) Shell should leave about 10mm-20mm of space when my toes are against the front.
3) Boot should feel tight, almost uncomfortable, until I have skied several hours in it.
4) I should look at getting custom foot beds / liners as they are worth the money.
5) I don't need to get a bag as I can just throw them in my hand luggage wink

Anything I have missed?

I have problems with my feet and wear orthotics in my trainers made by a physio. I guess this means some customisation is a necessity, but, footbeds? liners? both?

all advice gratefully received!

Failing that, you should buy a new outfit to match your boots Toofy Grin

Bambi on ice, personally, I just buy boots and wear them. However, I think I probably just have really boring feet. If you know you have problem tootsies you should certainly see a good boot fitter and take his/her advice rather than just buying on your own.

If you have problem feet and use orthotics then there's no question that custom footbeds will help. Take your orthotics with you to the ski shop, they may fit inside the boots.
Out of interest, which shop are you going to?

Im going to Rivington Alpine in Bolton (I live in Manchester) I have been recommended them by a friend who went there and said they spent a long time ensuring everything was spot on. I couldn't face 3 hours each way to Oxfordshire to see CEM!

Depends who you fly with, Ryanair made me take em out and check em in. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Wear thin socks while fitting and skiing.

A good bootfitter will match your foot shape to the correct foot.
Custom footbed is a must custom liner can be added later when the original one gets packed out (I bet they are nice though).

Bambi on Ice, clean feet are a must (not suggesting your's are dirty!) trim your toe nails too, take/buy a nice pair of technical socks. Practically everbody will benefit from a custom fitted footbed, whilst custom liners aren't exactly that, just heat moulded which speeds up the bedding in process unless conform'able, intuition or zip fit etc are being considered (which you don't need unless you have 'real' problem feet) as liner customisation is relatively quick and easy. Oh, and if there's a coffee shop nearby, bootfitters like coffee, or at least I did! lol.

I don't know anything about Rivington Alpine (the honest answer is that I've never heard of them) but personal recommendation on these things is always a good thing.

Ski Racing Supplies are based in Preston and they really know their stuff. Gary and Muriel run it and they must know something as their Grandson is one of our Olympic hopefuls next year! I don't know how much they cater for the non-racer but it should be worth giving them a call.

Bambi on ice, I've heard of Rivington Alpine but not been there, they have a good reputation. If I remember rightly CEM has pointed some other northerner to them in the past!
