Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Birthday present for Girlfriend

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello everyone.

I want to buy the misses some ski boots for her birthday. I want them to be brand new, and think white ones would make her happy as they are failry neutral.

She has only just learnt (she had lessons on a dry slope, and we went snow dome today. Shes taken to it well.

What would you lot recommend?

Thanks

Neil, personally i would recomend seeing a boot fitter and getting ones that fit.. White boots may work but there are no guarantees with colour...... make sure whereever you go does not just palm her off with big boots which feel nice and comfy when she puts them on at first..... when the boot is the correct size it will feel too small until the boot is clipped up and the foot has settled into the back of the liner...she needs to spend a good 10-15 mins in a boot to get her feet used to the snug fit and let the liner start to settle

it is easy to make a boot bigger, making them smaller is a nightmare

on the other hand please tell me that the colour thing was just a wind up Laughing

what you may be able to do (something i need to sort) is that you could buy a pair of tiny kids boots so you have something to give her on her birthday then trade them for the real pair when you take her shopping

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?
Im sure someone more experienced will come along and say the same, but the important thing to do when going
for boots is to go to a reputable place for proper fitting and be open to any colour, cost and brand.

Whats more important? to have a pair of boots that you think look cool (that when skiing knowbody even looks at) or a boot
that will allow you to ski all day in relative confort and allow your skiing ability to develop.

After re reading that post, it makes me cringe! I cant believe I wrote that! It does sound bad doesnt it! snowHead

If It was for me, function all the way and to hell with the design!
But its not, its for her so unfortunalty this means she has to like the look of it also.
Come on guys you know what most women are like! (sorry to all the women out there who arent like this, but the amount of times my misses has said she does like a car then a day later the same car goes past in a different colour and suddenly she loves it! Its a nightmare! It may be just her, but i doubt it!)

We are going to the snow show in London again this year. So hopefully I will get to find out one she likes and get some advice from the sales people there. But I have spoken to a few people at the show in previous years and its been pretty apprant they didnt know anything about certain products. I understand they cant be experts in every product but it can be pretty fustrating! I have google on my phone, I think I will try googling a boot and look up some reviews to back up anything I am told. Does that sound like a good idea? Or can anyone recommend a stall in particular with good knowlegable sales people/reps?

Seriously, get boots that fit and then decide if the colour is OK. There's no point buying something that matches the outfit if your GF is in pain all day.

On the subject of boot colour, when I was at the bootfitting shop buying my new Salomon Idols, the first pair the chap bought out were these shocking pink Technica boots! The look on my face must have been one of pure horror! But on assessing the shape of my feet, ankles and calves he said they might be a suitable boot, to which my reply was, "only if they're available in another colour!" Luckily for me the nice black Salomon boots were a much better fit!

I agree totally with the comments about fit being far more important than colour or looks, but nothing in the world would ever possess me to buy a pair of bright pink ski boots. I'd rather be in pain! Laughing

I shall ignore most of your sentence wink but key is 'same car, different colour' = same performance. Boots will most likely be different makes/models/sizes of boot, different colour' = could be painful, could be perfect fit.

Personally, I wouldn't buy boots at a ski show - they are much too busy to give you much time. With the honourable excpetion of CEM of course.

Whereabouts do you live? We can then come up with some suggestions as to where are good places to go - probably involving CEM or profeet wink

I live right at the bottom of the M11, Walthamstow. the ski shops I know of that are local are Snow and rock in Romford, and a ski shop in Brentwood.
The misses wants to go to Westfield shopping centre now Mad but were going to go via M25 and pop into Ski Togs Hire & Sales and BARTLETT'S SKI AND SNOWBOARD SPECIALISTS both on Uxbridge road on route.

If you can't make it to the Birmingham Ski show where I suspect CEM may possibly be making an appearance ( Puzzled ) then I would strongly recommend Bartlett's. I haven't bought from them for myself (yet), but our 9 y/o is a junior racer and we always use Bartlett's for his kit. They are superb at what they do.

It is a bit of a Mecca to those on the race circuit.....but they're not limited to race-level gear.

And I must point out that I am in no way connected with them!

We were really really impressed with BARTLETT'S. They are very knowlegable and a great help! They did try their best to drill home to the misses that it isnt about how the boot looks, but how it performs, so hopefully something there stuck...?! We are going to go to the London Ski show, and have a look around but I think we will be making a purchase from BARTLETT'S when we do finally buy her boots.

I got my eye on the Rossignol B14s myself! I have had the same boot for about 8 years and as it was a £99 Decathalon one, I think it might be time to upgrade?! I have always wanted the Bandit B2, I love that boot but as they seem IMPOSSIBLE to get hold off nowdays Crying or Very sad I guess the replacement B14s will have to do.

Is there is a chance that after 8 years that the fit of the NEW Rossis will be different to your current pair ??

I am having a dumb moment, i dont think i understand the question....?

I do think that my feet have changed a lot over the 8 years, so my boots dont fit as well as they first did. So I should buy a new pair as my skill set and foot shape have changed.

I think the point is don't set your sights on a particular boot, go with what your trusted boot fitter tells you...........

Your foot may have changed over the last eight years but it's also possible that Rossi have changed the last (boot shape).

Indeed, they aren't yellow, just a sober black - but with multi-coloured ZipFit liners for which I had carelessly failed to budget. Shocked Shocked Shocked I did, however budget for the new gold-plated socks, as I had suspected that my current ones would be too thick. Ho hum, happy days. Bread and water on the menu for the foreseeable future. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Neil, In an attempt to encourage your other half to consider another colour, why not suggest to her that whilst white or pale boots will look very classy brand new, they are likely to show every single scuff as grime gets locked into the scuffs that will quickly form on the boots. Use this argument if darker colour boots seem a better fit and ignore it if the white ones fit best - Derren Brown psychology Laughing
