hey
i am desperate to go snowboarding this year, i have missed the last 2 as have had kids born, but my feet are so itchy i have almost scratched them off.
some off my friends have said they are interested in coming but i dont see it happening.
i have looked into hostels but they all seem miles from the piste or are booked out already
so what does a geek with no friends and a limited budget do if he wants to go boarding ?

Draka,
Keep looking on here for people needing to complete a group or just post something in the "solo skier" section.
I had a similar situation last year when my usual crew bailed out one me (no money, working on the other side of the planet..)
Another snowhead posted here as one of their group cancelled, after some emails exchanged I decided to take the plunge and go with them...
I was nervous but it ended up being the one of my best decision. A great group it was and I am going back with them this January....
Another solution for you might be the bashes as Hurtle suggested, or you might want to look at UCPA/Action-outdoors holidays which are ideal for solo travellers and get good reviews.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Draka, I was in a similar position to you. Friends planning on coming but not ready to commit to a trip. I ended up booking a studio apartment (232 Euro), flights (150 pounds) and transfer (74 Euro return) to Flaine. Total cost 450 pounds. If they decide to come, they can stay in the studio and contribute toward the cost. If not, I get lots of space to myself.
If you arent going in peak times you could always hang on and see what late deals you can pick up staying in a catered chalet/hotel with a tour operator.
I was going to do that, but couldnt wait.

Draka, welcome to Snowheads. Are you planning to take the kids too? Family holiday or solo? I wasn't quite clear. If the family, have a look at Snowcoach - I've just had their brochure, as we've used them in the past, and they've got some good prices and offers. If you plan to leave them all behind I'd also strongly support the UCPA suggestion - it would be ideal for you and you'd be lucky to find cheaper I've never been on a Snowheads bash but I'm sure that'd be good too - and maybe solve all your futue "holidaying alone" problems!

Draka. Welcome.
As said, don't overlook going on your own. It's not for everyone, but due to the nature of the beast, you're rarely "alone" for long, being a great way to meet new people, travellers and locals alike.
Also try the www.snowboardclub.co.uk
Partic the the SCUK Winterbash 2010..................

(p.s. I'm assuming you're solo).

Draka, just go by yourself! I've done this plenty of times. You're in charge of where you go and what you do and there are always plenty of like-minded people about to ski or socialise with, if that's what you want.

To be honest, and being the greedy type, I looked at that as a possible 2nd/3rd jolly, but maybe by car..............
Seems to be plenty of interest, from all ages, though mainly whippersnappers.

BCjohnny, doesn't matter if there are whippersnappers around. there's enough non-whippersnappers to get your own crew of riders for the week. i am actually heading out for two weeks in jan, the week preceding the bash, as well as the bash week itself.
if this will be the 2nd/3rd jolly, where are your others occurring? or is it a stupid q as i could assume from your username?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Just a couple of weeks in Canada March as yet, possibly trip or two to Ecosse. Plus whatever else I can get my greedy hands on............
So you going out around the 8/9th Jan? Booked up? I come back from India around then, but can be ready to roll a couple days later. Might keep tabs on things and see how it pans out. Especially if someone has cribs to fill and fancies a drive over, maybe 10/11 days.
If you here of anything PM me. I'll drop by the site, meantimes, anyway.
John.

Draka,
take a look at Pleisure holidays . They have a good set up for snowboarders including singles. Their prices are very reasonable for the location.

Come stay with us! We have some cheap spots for which we don't charge any single supplements. Usually pretty friendly vibe in the chalet, but if not then you're stuck with me for a couple of days riding at least!
